Some weary bodies and missed opportunities led to a 1-1-1 week for the Woodhaven hockey team.

The Warriors belted Pioneer 6-1 in Ann Arbor a week ago, but the game took a toll.

The game was a late one to begin with and when the Woodhaven bus would not start afterward, the team had to wait for another which led to a late-night arrival home.

“It was well into Valentine’s Day when we got back,” said Coach Bryan Sullivan.

The Warriors then had a non-league road date against a tough Plymouth Salem team the next night.

It was 1-1 after the first period, but the road legs caught up with Woodhaven in the second period when the Rocks scored four times and went on to post a 6-3 win.

“Salem is a good team,” said Sullivan. “It was not like we were going to beat them by 10 goals anyway, but you could just see we didn’t have it in that second period.”

Billy Brock, Mike Williams and Alex Robinson had the Woodhaven goals. Matt Bederka had two assists.

Two nights later, Woodhaven hit the ice again and skated to a 2-2 tie with Anderson.

Against the Warriors started fast and faded late.

“We dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, but never go back to that level,” Sullivan said. “With the playoffs right around the corner, we have to learn to play a full 51 minutes.”

Brock and Jake Hernandez had Woodhaven’s goals in the Southgate game.

Williams had a five-point night (three goals, two assists) in the victory at Pioneer.

His linemate Dom Moore had two goals and Jake Swindle had the other.

Trevor Monaco stopped 20 of 21 shots in that game and was the winning goalie.

Woodhaven faces its biggest game to date when Grosse Pointe South comes to call tonight. With a win, the Warriors claim the Michigan Metro League West Division championship.

“It is a big game,” said Sullivan. “Hopefully the kids understand that and come out ready to play.”

The Warriors conclude the regular season Saturday against Grosse Ile in game that can be seen and heard on our Website, MiPrepZone.com/thenewsherald.
