HOCKEY: Trojans barely hang on after 5-0 lead

Last Wednesday was one of those walk in the parks that turned into a whit-knuckle affair for the Trenton hockey team.

The Trojans built a 5-0 lead over Warren DeLaSalle, a team they had already beaten once this season, and then hung on for a 5-4 win as the Pilots rallied late in the third period.

Leading 5-0, Trenton pulled goalie Garrett Carroll, but three goals – one power play and two shorthanded – forced the Trenton staff to put him back in the game.

The Pilots got another goal in the closing minute with their goalie pulled and Carroll had to make one final big save as the finals second ticked off to preserve the win.

“It was one of those games where things were going along pretty well and then we really had to hold out breaths at the end,” said Trenton Coach Mike Turner.

Despite the hairy ending, Turner said he was happy with the way his team came out against DeLaSalle, generating 52 shots on goal and outshooting the visitors 2-to-1.

“We had beaten this team once before and we didn’t want to see the kids come out and take them lightly,” Turner said. “They didn’t. They skated and played hard and that was good to see.”

The recently formed Brad Teska-Andrew Sawyer-Justin Dunn line continued to shine, producing four of the five goals on the night.

Dunn had two goals and an assists, Teska had a goal and three assists and Sawyer had a goal and two assists.

Nick Bondy had the other Trenton goal, Michael Kinney had two assists and Connor Cunningham had one.

The Trojans host U-D Jesuit tonight and close the regular season with a road game against Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Friday.
