After a tough loss to Grosse Pointe North earlier in the week, the Roosevelt hockey team bounced back with a solid game to earn a point against Port Huron Northern.
The Bears traveled to Port Huron over the weekend where they tied 1-1 with the Huskies.
Despite trailing two full periods, Roosevelt Coach Mike Quint said his team played really well against the Huskies and stepped up its play the third and overtime periods.
“Sometimes we have lapses in the third, so we were concentrating on taking the play to them instead of them taking the play to us,” Quint said.
The changes worked and the Bears outworked their opponent on all levels.
“We outplayed them, outshot them (and) we had three, four chances to win it,” Quint said. “We were all over them.”
The Bears tied the game with 10:33 left to play with a goal from Griffin Maiani. John Calhoun had the assist.
The teams played an eight-minute overtime but neither team was able to score.
Frank Cerulla was in net for the Bears, stopping 24 of 25 shots.
Earlier in the week, Roosevelt was at Grosse Pointe North, where they fell 7-1 to the Norsemen.
The Bears took an early lead just five minutes into the game when Tyler Winters netted the only goal of the night. He was assisted by Aaron Robinson and Vinnie Jelsomeno.
Grosse Pointe tied the game 10 minutes later and neither team saw scoring in the middle period.
But the Norsemen opened the gates in the third period, adding six goals to their score, including three in just over three minutes to start the period.
“We totally don’t understand what happened in the third period even as coaches,” Quint said. “We came out flat (and) we never rebounded.”
The Bears made a goalie change and called a timeout, but were unable to get back in the game.
“This one hurt, but I think the kids rebounded well in the next game,” Quint said.
Justin Armatis stopped 16 of 20 shots faced before Cerulla took over and stopped five of eight shots.
The Bears have two games left in their regular season before playoffs begin in two weeks.
Quint and his team will focus on this week, taking it one opponent at a time, before looking to Woodhaven in the first round of districts.
Tomorrow the Bears travel to Carlson and stay on the road for their final game of the season on Saturday against Warren DeLaSalle.
“We’re healthy,” Quint said. “(But) we just need to go one game at a time.”
