BOYS' BASKETBALL: Catholic League roundup

Cabrini won a pair of high-scoring league games last week and, after receiving some help, secured a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Catholic League playoffs after wins over Waterford Lakes and Royal Oak Shrine.

On Tuesday, the Monarchs outlasted Lakes, who was in first place at the time, in a shootout 92-82.

“It was an unbelievable game,” Cabrini Coach Mark Shea said. “Both teams just couldn’t miss. It was a great high school basketball game.”

Six Monarchs reached double figures in the barnburner led by Mike Ball with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Ian Wagner had 20 points and 10 assists, Andrew Smith scored 14 and David Szczesny and Sean David each scored 10 in the win.

Lakes was 5-2 in Catholic League play entering the game and had defeated Cabrini 69-62 on Jan. 17.

On Friday, the Monarchs still trailed Lakes by a game in the standings and would either finish first or third in the league when they night was over.

Good basketball and some luck aided the Monarchs to a first-place league finish after a 73-59 win over Shrine and a Lakes loss led to identical league records (5-3) with Cabrini holding the tiebreaker based on margin of victory.

“I really commended the kids,” Shea said. “We’re getting healthy and we’re just a different ballclub with a lot of depth now.”

The Monarchs were led by David’s 17 points on Friday and Smith also had another solid outing with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Tony Bertani had nine in the win and Ball added eight points and 12 boards.

Cabrini, (9-6, 5-3 Catholic League) who has now won five-straight, hosted Flat Rock on Monday and will open the Catholic League playoffs on Saturday at Ladywood against Marine City Cardinal Mooney.

Richard wins two

Gabriel Richard locked up the second seed in the upcoming Catholic League playoffs with a pair of wins last week over Trillium Academy and Marine City Cardinal Mooney.

On Tuesday, the Pioneers were scheduled to play Detroit Cristo Rey at home for senior night, but a last-minute cancellation led to a matchup with Trillium which Richard won 51-17.

Danny Baum led the Pioneers with 16 points and Jake Camilleri added 11.

“It was good recognition for our seniors,” Richard Coach Kris Daiek said. “You always want your seniors to go out with a bang. They’ve made good strides in the last two years.”

On Thursday, Richard overcame a slow start to defeat Cardinal Mooney 48-38.

The Pioneers stalled in the early going and trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before a late surge tied the game heading into the half.

“We were a little sluggish to get started,” Daiek said. “At the half, we talked about coming out in the second half and throwing a punch.”

The Pioneers connected and jumped out to a seven-point lead entering the fourth to seal the game.

Colton Jarratt led the Pioneers with 14 points and Camilleri added 10 in the win.

“We’ve done a pretty good job and I’m impressed with how the kids have responded,” Daiek said.

The win locked up a No. 2 seed in the Catholic League playoffs this week.

Richard will play Frankel Jewish Academy on Thursday and will travel to Ladywood for the opening round of the league playoffs against Bishop Foley.
