Rails avenge loss
After a tight 57-54 loss at Roosevelt on Jan. 29, Lincoln Park went into Thursday’s matchup with revenge on its mind.
The Rails succeeded in redeeming themselves at home with a 60-48 victory over the Bears to open the second half of Downriver League play.
“We always play a little better at home,” Lincoln Park Coach Todd Tobin said. “Lincoln Park/Wyandotte is always a pretty good game.”
Roosevelt started strong and led 18-5 at one point in the first quarter before taking a 19-10 lead after eight minutes.
The Rails fought back in the second quarter and cut the deficit to two points, 27-25, at the half.
“They really started knocking down shots in the second,” Roosevelt Coach Dave Cramton said. “They play with a lot of pride and they were not going to roll over on themselves.”
Lincoln Park began to pull away in the third and outscored the Bears 13-6 in the quarter.
Unlike the first meeting, the Rails were efficient beyond the arc (5-for-12) and from the free throw line, specifically in the fourth quarter where they shot 13-for-16.
Lincoln Park’s Tywan Cage led the Rails with 24 points while Dawone Gray scored 18 and Delvon Byner-Simmons had nine.
“All three of them played a very efficient game,” Tobin said.
Devan Stewart led the Bears with 25 points. Divon Robinson had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jacob Lavis added eight in the loss.
“(Lincoln Park) really wanted to win that game,” Cramton said. “Just the not want to lose at home mentality, so give them a lot of credit.”
Lincoln Park (8-7, 6-4 DRL) will travel to Truman on Thursday.
On Monday, the Bears defeated River Rouge at home 64-52.
Roosevelt led throughout and played one of its better games against a tough opponent.
“They’re a good team,” Cramton said. “Really tall, long and athletic.”

Roosevelt (11-4, 6-4 DRL) traveled to Trenton on Tuesday and will remain on the road at Allen Park on Thursday.

“I could never get comfortable in the game,” Anderson Coach Dave Pratt said. “We could never really feel like we were going to put them away.
The game featured a matchup between two of the best big men in the area as Anderson’s Connor Phee (19 points) and Woodhaven’s Donnie Stoddard (20 points) went toe-to-toe throughout.
Shane Frietag scored 17 points for Anderson while Woodhaven’s Brandon Imperati added 17 in the loss.

Eagles outlast Cards
Kennedy earned its first road victory of the season on Thursday with a 55-50 win over Melvindale.
The Eagle trailed 26-24 at the half, but pulled away from the Cards in the second half thanks to a strong effort by Andia Marsh.
“We had a hard time with (Marsh),” Melvindale Coach Ryan Vranesich said. “Every big rebound, every big steal, he seemed to get. We were tied with about five minutes left and he kind of took over with making plays and getting kids layups.”
Marsh led Kennedy with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, Matt Woloszyk had 11 points and five rebounds and Vertez Tillman added eight.
KleSean Clark had 10 points for Melvindale and Albert Webster added nine.
“We played super hard,” Vranesich said. “My biggest fear as a coach is that this is going to kind of get away from us because we’re losing games, but I’m so proud of this group because it’s not happening at all.
“They’re not letting it affect how they behave or how they view basketball. They’re sticking to it and they’re fighting and that’s all I can really ask of this group.”
Kennedy (6-8, 3-7 DRL) hosted Anderson on Tuesday and will remain home against Woodhaven on Thursday.
Melvindale (3-12, 2-8 DRL) was schedule to play Lincoln Park on Tuesday and Carlson on Thursday, but both games have been rescheduled for Feb. 26 and 28.
