With Saturday’s win over Traverse City Central, veteran Trenton Coach Mike Turner reached an important milestone with his 600th career high school coaching victory.
Turner, who is in his 27th season at Trenton, is second on the all-time hockey victory list only to retired East Kentwood Coach Ron Baum.
The remarkable thing about Turner’s record is that he took a 13-year break from 1981 until 1994, when he coached at the University of Michigan and was in private business.
Turner’s teams, which have at least 20 games in a season 20 times, average more than 22 wins a season.
Based on that rate, if Turner had coached during his 13 years away from the high school game, his number of wins would be nearing 900.
Trenton has three more regular-season games this year and up to six more in the Michigan High School Athletic Association state playoffs.
In addition to his wins, Turner has taken Trenton to 10 state championship and four state runner-up finishes.
