GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Huron League roundup

On Feb. 7, the undefeated Flat Rock girls’ basketball team continued its dominating season with a 47-39 victory over Huron League rival Riverview.

Despite a lack of energy and going 9-for-26 from the foul line, the Rams were able to hang out for the win.

“We played well but didn’t possess our normal energy for some reason,” Coach Marc Villemure said. “Riverview played extremely hard and out worked us for stretches of the game.”

Flat Rock took a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and added 13 points in the second quarter to take a 28-20 lead at halftime.

Paige Villemure led the team with 13 points and five blocks. Haley Boyer recorded 10 points and nine rebounds.

Riverview Coach Martin Mucha though his team played hard but made too many mental mistakes to beat a team like Flat Rock.

Anna Vega led all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds.

Hannah Love finished the night with eight points and four rebounds.

Earlier in the week, the Bucs hosted Monroe Jefferson, defeating them 42-32 on their senior night.

Riverview lost Vega in the first quarter to injury but still led the entire game and secured the win.

Kelsey Brewer led the team with 11 points and five steals.

Kirsten Chambers had seven points and three steals, and Michala Burke finished with six points and nine rebounds.

The same night, the Rams defeated Milan in a crushing 57-13 victory.

Branna Keethler led Flat Rock with 14 points. Morgan Kaiser, Boyer and Villemure all finished the night with 10 points.

“We came out and played very well in the first quarter,” Villemure said. “I thought we showed a ton of confidence and moved the ball around efficiently.”

The Rams hosted second place Grosse Ile on Monday and will host Airport Thursday.

Riverview hosted Huron on Monday and will travel to St. Mary’s Catholic Central on Thursday.

The Huron basketball team is fighting for a second place finish in the Huron League and had two league wins last week.

On Feb. 4, the team hosted SMCC and defeated them 41-27.

The Chiefs only allowed eight points to be scored against them in the first half and led 18-8 at the half.

“We’ve been mixing up man and matchup zones and giving people a lot of trouble with it,” Coach Jim Kabfleisch said. “We played everybody and our kids played really well.”

Lissa Kowalewski led the team with her double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. She also recorded three blocks and two steals.

Hailey Richardson added nine points and Kristin Wolber led with eight steals to go with her six points.

Three nights later, the Chiefs defeated Airport 47-39.

Huron did not allow more than nine points in the first three quarters and led 33-21 after three.

The Chiefs had a comfortable lead and the Jets moved to fouling Huron and putting them on the line.

The Chiefs went 18-for-36 from the line.

“We didn’t do a good job of shooting free throws,” Kabfleisch said. “It got pretty physical.”

Airport made a run of their own and outscored the Chiefs 18-14 in the final quarter, but could not complete the comeback.

Kowalewski led again with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. She also added three blocks and two assists.

Richardson finished with eight points, four rebounds and two steals, and Savannah Floyd had six points, seven rebounds and one assist.

The Chiefs traveled to Riverview last night and will travel to Grosse Ile on Thursday with hopes of a victory after falling to the Red Devils earlier in the season.

“We’re gonna do the things we’ve been doing,” Kabfleisch said. “Fixing up our man and matchup zones (and) giving people a little bit of trouble.”
