Last Friday the Woodhaven girls’ basketball, undefeated in Downriver League play, team hosted Trenton and defeated the Trojans 71-34.

The Trojans were able to hang with the Warriors for a quarter, but early fouls troubled the team.

Paige Machnacki was strong for Trenton in the first quarter, scoring six of her points but two fouls caused trouble and the Warriors led 14-10 after the first.

In the second quarter, the Warriors put together a nice run and outscored the Trojans 24-4 to take a 38-14 lead at the half.

After falling to the Warriors earlier in the season, Trenton went in with a new game plan but the Warriors proved too much.

Coach Rob Sauter said in both games, his team did a good job of defending the Warriors in the first and third quarters but got worn out in the second and fourth.

“That’s what their style does to you,” Sauter said.

Despite the changes, Sauter said the game ended up being not that much different from the first time the teams met, but they did allow the Warriors one less three pointer than the last time.

“We wanted to do a better job on that,” Sauter said. “We started off well but then we just didn’t do a good enough job on the point shooters.

“Our girls battled the whole game and that’s all you can ask.”

Machnacki led the team with 15 points and three steals.

Stephanie Galczyk recorded 10 points and seven boards and attacked the basket hard all night.

Megan Benoist and Aevah Hebda had nine rebounds each and Sauter said Benoist did a really good job of helping the team handle Woodhaven’s pressure.

The Warriors were pleased with their win and the coaching staff said the team played with defensive intensity the whole night.

Cassie Breen led the way for the Warriors with 19 points and six assists.

Brianna Brennan also recorded a strong night, scoring 14 points.

Saline Shubik added eight points and five steals, Hailey Liedel and Lyndsay Brenna each had seven points and Allison Manning scored six.

On Feb. 5, Woodhaven defeated Allen Park 74-37.

Brennan led the team with 15 points, followed by Currie with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Breen busted a couple triples, scoring 12 points total.

Lyndsay Brennan finished the night with 10, Erica Marvaso hit two big threes to finish with eight points and Liedel played well in the post, scoring six points.

The Warriors hosted Carlson last night before traveling to Southgate on Friday to take on the Titans.

Earlier in the week, the Trojans took on Taylor Kennedy and defeated the Eagles 51-31.

Trenton got off to a slow start and only led 6-5 after the first eight minutes.

Hebda really got the Trojans going in the second quarter, scoring 11 of her 14 points.

After outscoring the Eagles 24-8 in the second quarter, Trenton took a 30-13 lead at the half.

Machnacki led the team with her double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also recorded four steals.

Hebda finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and Galczyk recorded 10 points.

Benoist was all over the glass for the Trojans and brought down 16 rebounds to go with her four points, and Shelby Kohler had a good night on the glass brining in seven rebounds and three assists.

Kennedy was led by Jazz Bathurst with 10 points and Asia Page with 11 rebounds.

This week the Trojans continue their battle for third place in the Downriver League with games against Southgate last night and Allen Park on Friday.

“For us, when you play against the better teams like Tuesday against Southgate, we just want to be able to improve upon what we have done in the past,” Sauter said. “We’re looking at now our goal is third, and that we are ready to be as good as we can be, come tournament time.

“Everything is about us getting better and that’s what we want to look at each game.”

The 10-1 Anderson team held on to their DRL second place spot with a 44-26 victory over Carlson, who is battling for a third place finish.

The Titans, who have been focusing on a fast start, came out flat, not making their shots or being aggressive and the Marauders led 11-2 after the first quarter.

But Anderson overcame the adversity and turned things around in the second quarter, holding Carlson to two points, while scoring 18 of their own.

“I said here’s a case where you’re down, facing a little adversity here,” Anderson Coach Larry Sakalas said. “Within a minute we were down three. We went right back at it and got aggressive and made our shots.

The girls reacted really well to a little bit of adversity.”

The Marauders started strong but had some trouble handling the Titans.

“We came out and we were playing really strong,” Coach Phil Carlson said. “(But) we had a few things not go our way. We didn’t handle the back pressure very well.

“We had a good game plan defensively coming in, but couldn’t stick to it.”

Sarah Carlson led the team with her eight points and Paige Blakeslee added six points.

The Marauders also saw nice help off the bench from Haley Ganaw.

“She came off the bench and played really well for us and gave us some stability,” Carlson said.

The Titans were led by Tinara Moore with her double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Amani Corley finished the night with 10 points, three rebounds, three blocks and three assists, and Laekyn Jaciuk recorded eight points.

The Titans now prepare for a tough week. On Monday, they played a rescheduled game against Truman. Last night they hosted Trenton and on Friday will host undefeated Woodhaven.

The Marauders traveled to Woodhaven last night and will travel to Melvindale Friday for their league crossover game.

A week ago, Taylor Truman traveled to Melvindale where they defeated the Cardinals 43-41.

The teams alternated one point leads at the end of the first two quarters before facing a tied 28-28 game in the third quarter.

At the end of the first quarter, Truman was leading 12-11.

In the quarter, they were led by April Micheaux who scored six of her points. Melvindale was led by Auriel Harris who scored nine points, including a two-point shot at the buzzer.

In the second quarter, Truman was able to get some transition scoring from Victoria Fisher who scored four points in the quarter to keep the Cougars in the game.

Melvindale led 21-20 at the half.

Truman increased their tempo in the third quarter by playing full court man to man defense and substituted several times to get the best matchups.

“In the third quarter, we had to alter our game plan and increase the tempo of the game,” Truman Coach Chad Putnam sad. “I especially thought that Mariah Hopkins did some nice things defensively in the third quarter and late in the game.

“She did a lot of little things that won’t show up on the state sheet, but they were key to our victory in this game.”

Micheaux accounted for all of the Cougar scoring in the third quarter, scoring eight points.

Micheaux kept up her strong offensive night in the final quarter, adding 13 points to her total.

Melvindale was working for a last second shot, but threw the ball away with 16 seconds left, allowing Truman to take control and get the win.

The Cougars had the ball out of bounds and had to contend with the Cardinals’ full court pressure defense.

Diamond Thomas got the ball past half court with 10 seconds to go and got the ball to Micheaux who netted the game winner with four seconds to go.

Melvindale took a timeout after the basket in hopes of responding with their own but Judah Frazier intercepted the Cardinal inbound pass near half court and time ran out.

Micheaux led the Cougars with her career high double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds.

Victoria Fisher (four points), Frazier (three points), Chelsea Bedwell (two points eight rebounds) Caprice King (two points) and Thomas (two points) all contributed to the Truman victory.

Micheaux shot 12-for-24 from the field.

“As a team, we are pleased that we earned the win in this game,” Putnam said. “Melvindale battled the entire game and they made us work extremely hard throughout the game.”

The Cardinals were led by Harris who accounted for 28 points.

“We just didn’t have answers for April underneath the basket,” Coach Tom Schick said. “We’ve had issues on the boards all season long and Truman was able to take advantage of our weakness.”

Despite the loss, Schick was pleased with his team’s effort.

“I’m still very proud of my girls,” he said. “They have a lot of fight in them. However, we need to learn that doing the little things in a game can have a huge impact on the game.”

The Cardinals played a rescheduled game against Lincoln Park on Friday and hosted Roosevelt last night. Friday they will host Carlson in a league-cross over game.

The Cougars hosted Kennedy last night and will host Roosevelt Friday.
