HOCKEY: Carlson, Flat Rock-Airport compete in SMCC showcase

Over the weekend, the Carlson hockey team competed in the St. Mary’s Catholic Central tournament where the Marauders finished with a tie and a loss.

On Friday, the Marauders tied with Bedford after the Kicking Mules forced overtime with just three minutes to play.

Carlson scored a goal in each period of regulation and took a two goal lead before Bedford got on the board.

The Kicking Mules got the scoreboard with a power play goal and a minute and a half later, tied the game at two.

With 16 seconds to go in the middle period, Carlson took their lead back to go up 3-2 heading into the final 17 minutes.

Pat Holder netted two goals, and CJ Yacoune got one.

The Marauders played a nice third period but a mistake cost them a goal and led to overtime.

With 3:34 left to play in regulation, Carlson coughed up the puck and allowed a turnover in their zone. Bedford picked it up and put a nice shot through Ellis Graham for the tie.

Coach Dennis Gundick thought his team entered the game a little sluggish, suffering from injuries and illness, and said Bedford capitalized on their mistakes.

“No excuses,” Gundick said. “Bedford came back and took advantage of our mistakes. It was a good overtime up and down (but) nobody could put it in the back of the net.”

On Saturday the Marauders were on the losing end of a 7-4 game against host SMCC.

Yacoune got Carlson on board, his first of three.

The Falcons tied the game on the power play, but Drew Hull put Carlson up 2-1 in the second period.

But SMCC put together a run, and scored four unanswered goals in the second period to take a 5-2 lead heading into the final period.

In the third period, the Falcons scored twice within six seconds to cap off their scoring.

Yacoune responded with a full strength goal and power play goal to finish his hat trick and cap off the Marauder scoring.

Despite strong play at the end of the game, the Marauders were unable to complete their comeback.

“I think we had more energy in the last five minutes than we did the whole game,” Gundick said. “They only had 10 players. They played a strong game and played real well.”

Gundick’s team has two tough games this week when they face Dearborn Unified tonight and Grosse Ile on Friday.

“We thought we outplayed them (Dearborn) the first game,” Gundick said. “I think we’re gonna go in with that frame of mind that we can play with these guys. It should be pretty comparable.

“As far as Grosse Ile, we can’t take them lightly. We’ve never beaten them so hopefully we can go out there and be competitive with them.”

The Flat Rock-Airport combined team also participated in the showcase, dropping games to SMCC and Bedford.

After a very close first half of the game play, Flat Rock fell 8-1 to host SMCC.

The experienced and powerful Falcons overcame the young Jets team and could not catch up.

The Jets’ lone goal was scored by junior center Sam Farrah. Tucker Senne and Jared Gersky had the assists.

The next night, the Jets fell 3-2 against Bedford in overtime in a game Coach Tim Ames called a thriller.

Bedford jumped out to a two goal lead in the first period but the second half of the game was all the Jets.

Farrah found the back of the net to put Flat Rock-Airport on the scoreboard with a power play goal.

The goal was assisted by Alex Jennings.

Moments later, Austin Jacobs tied the game at two heading into the third period. Jennings again had the assist.

The Jets had the pressure on Bedford in the third period, but were unable to find the back of the net and the teams headed to overtime.

In overtime, it was either team’s game and both saw scoring chances.

But a costly turnaround and a shot from the point, beat Jet’s goalie Michael Vella giving Bedford the win.

Ames thought his team played well enough to win, but just came up short.

“I believe our team will surprise a few more teams before the end of the season,” Ames said. “This team is greatly improved from the start of the season (and) it has been a successful merger between the two schools.”

Earlier in the week, the Jets fell 6-1 against league rival Huron.

The win improved the Chiefs to 10-6 on the year in their parent’s night game.

The Jets got on board first with a goal from Sam Farrah, assisted by Seth Farrah at the 7:15 mark of the first period.

Later in the first, the Chiefs tied the game with a goal from Steven Moore.

Jesse McGowan and Tyler Graves had the assists.

After their “Parents Night” celebration, Huron came out with more purpose in the second and took a lead early in the period, which they never gave up.

Michael Laskey gave the Chiefs their lead and Ian Graves extended the lead before the period was over. McGowan had the assist.

The Chiefs opened the gates in the third period and scored three unanswered goals to put the game away.

Zack Pawlasczski, Drew Summit (power play) and Moore all netted goals to secure the win.

McGowan and Devin Collins had the assists.

Jordan Bantau had a solid night in net, allowing just one goal on 22 shots faced and improved his record to 9-3 on the season.
