Over the weekend, the Roosevelt hockey team competed in the big MIHL showcase at Kennedy Recreation Center where the Bears split a pair games.
On Friday the Bears were victorious 6-1 over Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
Roosevelt took a five goal lead before Catholic Central was able to get on board.
Andrew Storey gave the Bears an early lead, less than three minutes into the game, assisted by Ben Thompson and Blake Reames.
Aaron Robinson extended the lead with just under seven to go in the middle period.
He was assisted by Vinnie Jelsomeno and Tyler Winters.
John Calhoun netted the next two to give the Bears a comfortable lead.
Halfway through the middle period, Calhoun netted a power play goal, assisted by Josh Hinderliter and Joe Smellie.
He got his second of the night just 14 seconds into the third period on a shorthanded goal also assisted by Hinderliter and Smellie.
Two minutes later, Storey got his second of the night, assisted by Matt Siewniak.
Catholic Central broke through Roosevelt defense on the power play, 3:30 into the final period when Andrew Wallick scored the only goal of the night.
He was assisted by Brian Cain and Tyler Kerjes.
With just over a minute to go, Smellie added a goal to his assists when he got a power play goal to cap off the Bears’ scoring.
Justin Armatis got the win in net, stopping 26 of 27 shots.
The following day, the Bears were on the losing end of a 3-1 game against Calumet.
The Copper Kings took a three goal lead before Roosevelt was able to get on board in the third period.
Calumet took an early lead when Eric Mattila scored just 37 seconds into the opening period.
Robert Erkkila had the assist.
Brendan Jacques furthered the lead with a power play goal three minutes later. He was assisted by Mattila and Lucas Lahnala.
Erkkila added a goal to his assist to cap off the Copper Kings’ scoring ,assisted by Lahnala.
In the final period, Calhoun got the Bears on the scoreboard, unassisted, five minutes into the period, but it was the only scoring of the game.
“We actually played two very good games,” Roosevelt Coach Mike Quint said. “We just couldn’t score against Calumet. We outshot them (and) outplayed them. But you gotta put the puck in the net.
“We’re working on putting the puck in the net, crashing the net. We’re telling the kids that you’ve gotta get 15 shots a period.”
Like many local teams, the Bears are also suffering from injuries and sickness but are battling through as playoffs approach.
With only four games left in the season, Quint and his team are working on line changes, quicker shifts and trying to keep their goals against down to give the team a chance to win games.
Earlier in the week, Roosevelt fell 7-2 to Cranbrook.
After Cranbrook took a 5-0 lead Thompson got the Bears on board, assisted by Giuseppe Buscemi.
Hinderliter got the second goal in the third period, assisted by Robinson.
The Bears face Grosse Pointe North tonight before traveling to Port Huron on Saturday.
Quint hopes to grab a couple league wins to help set the tone for playoffs in the tough league.
“The reason we went into the league is that we wanted every game to be a battle (and) try to make our kids elevate our game to that level of the league,” Quint said. “It’s by far one of the best leagues in the state. We didn’t come in thinking we were gonna have 20 win seasons.
“We’re a little disappointed at some of our games but we have not been mercied (and) it’s a good thing that the kids have their focus.”
Despite some tough losses, Quint says they will not matter come Feb. 26 when playoffs start and it is a whole new season.
Jaguars win
After losing their Thursday game to Warren DeLaSalle, the Allen Park Jaguars bounced back with a 6-3 victory over Bay Area Reps on Saturday.
The Reps took the first lead of the game almost 11 minutes into the first period.
Zach Hill scored a first handed goal, unassisted to put his team up 1-0.
But the Jaguars got to work and scored six straight goals before allowing another goal against.
David Pischke got the scoring started as the first period was coming to a close, assisted by Aaron Porter and Nick Metropoulos.
The team really went to work in the second period, adding four goals to their total in just under a nine minute span.
Just seven seconds in, Steve Littleton gave the Jags a lead they never let up. Metropoulos had the assist.
Metropoulos added a goal to his assist at the 4:18 mark, assisted by Porter and Littleton.
Just over a minute later, Nick Kelly extended the lead, helped out by Pishke and Josh Haney.
Porter then netted a shorthanded goal to cap off the scoring in the second period.
Pishke and Tom Snyder had the assists.
Porter struck again in the final period with a power play goal, assisted by Metropoulos and Littleton.
Bay Area got the offense going again with goals from Deryk Henderson and Hill, but could not complete the comeback with under two minutes to go.
Jackson Drake, Scott Fisher, Nick Sicinski and Hill had the assists.
Cody LaButte and Todd Maynard split time in net for the Jags.
LaButte stopped 22 of 23 shots and Maynard blocked nine of 11.
Allen Park plays this Saturday at 2:00 at Clark Park in Detroit against Dearborn Unified.
After falling to Saginaw Heritage Thursday night, the Riverview hockey team lost to Grand Rapids Forest Hills in a shootout Saturday afternoon.
GR took a two goal lead before the Bucs were able to get on board.
Connor Matulaitis got the scoring started with a power play goal with less than a minute to go in the first period.
He was assisted by Kellan Buddy.
Bryce Boverhof extended the lead, 5:20 into the middle period. Marc Anderson had the assist.
Just over halfway into the middle period, the Bucs got on board when Alex Testy netted one, assisted by Brian Bachnak.
Almost a full period later, Bachnak added a goal to his assist to tie the game. He was unassisted.
After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout and goals from Anderson and Devon Holt gave GR their win.
Zach Woolcott was in net for Riverview,
stopping 24 of 26 shots.
Devils win again
After defeating St. Clair Shores on Thursday night, the Grosse Ile Red Devils went on to defeat Portage Central in a shootout.
The Red Devils overcame some adversity and won despite taking 15 penalties to Central’s seven.
Portage took the first lead of the game, just over two minutes in when Zander Sorenson got the scoring started, helped out by John Hayward.
Grosse Ile responded with three goals of their own to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
Enrico Muto got the Red Devil scoring started at the 8:55 mark of the opening period to tie the game.
Dean Ziberi and Zach Lemerand had the assists.
With less than four minutes to go in the first period, Aaron Porcarelli netted a shorthanded goal to give the Red Devils a lead.
He was assisted by Luke Moma.
Moma added a goal to his assist just over halfway through the second period with a power play goal
Portage pulled the game within one goal just over a minute into the final period when Cory Carr got a power play goal. Hayward and Jace Mackellar had the assists.
Mac Schuen tied the game at the 12:38 mark, unassisted forcing overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout and Grosse Ile goals from Porcarelli and Lemerand secured the win.
Reggie Vella had the win in net, stopping 22 of 25 shots.
The Red Devils had almost a week off and will take on Carlson on Friday.
