BOYS' BASKETBALL: Huron wins rivalry game over Flat Rock (PHOTO)

It was rivalry time in Flat Rock on Friday as the Rams welcomed Huron for a predictably tough Huron League matchup that saw the Chiefs pull out an exciting 52-47 road victory.

The Rams came sprinting out of the gate, scoring the game’s first seven points before taking a 9-7 lead after one quarter.

Mike Chickeral extended the Flat Rock lead before the half by leading the Rams to a 20-13 advantage in the second quarter highlighted by his timely three-pointer with less than five seconds remaining in the half for a 29-20 halftime lead. Chickeral led all scorers with 10 points in the quarter and 15 in the half.

Huron Coach Joe Cieslak took advantage of halftime and motivated his team to step up its intensity in the second half.

“All we did was really appeal to their sense of pride and tell them for us to beat people, we have to bring it every day,” Cieslak said. “We have to be intense and it has to start on the defensive end.

“Our defense intensity was much better and we did get off to a good start and hit some shots early. We told them that it’s not going to be one guy that’s going to win it. It’s got to be all five guys on the floor.”

His speech paid dividends on both ends of the court as the Chiefs rallied back into the game by scoring the first 11 points of the second half and went into the final quarter only trailing by two points, 35-33.

Huron’s Tyler Olson knocked down a pair of big triples in the quarter and led the Chiefs with points.

“You kind of got to pick your poison a little bit,” Flat Rock Coach Dave Bogataj said. “We left Olson alone a little bit and he hit some big shots in the third.”

The teams traded leads in the early minutes of the fourth quarter before Huron began to pull away with five minutes to go, thanks in large part to the hot hand of Bill Ames, who led the Chiefs with seven fourth quarter points.

Holding a three-point lead, Tony Flaim put an exclamation point on the game for the Chiefs in the waning seconds with a breakaway slam dunk

“I’m really glad for Tony,” Cieslak said. “I’m glad he went to the basket and I’m glad he went to the basket with authority.”

No strangers to close games, the Chiefs have become accustomed to stressful endings.

“We’ve been in a lot of close games,” Cieslak said. “We are used to playing in close situations and we’re executing pretty good.”

The raucous crowd and vocal fans of this rivalry were treated to a competitive game from start-to-finish which makes a team’s victory much sweeter.

It also makes defeat much more bitter.

“It’s frustrating because it’s a nice rivalry game,” Bogataj said. “It was a nice crowd and it was a lot of fun, but of course you want the win.

“The kids play hard. They haven’t had a lot of success, but they play real hard and games like this are fun to watch.”

Ames led the Chiefs with 16 points and seven rebounds. Olson scored 13 points, Flaim had 10 points and seven rebounds and Karan Ghuman added eight.

Chickeral had 24 points and five rebounds for Flat Rock, Justin Nickols had 10 and Mitchell Mayberry had nine.
