Several local swimming teams made their annual trip to Woodhaven last Saturday for the Warrior Invitational and the powerful Roosevelt Bears reigned supreme with a first-place finish.

The Bears took first in three events and finished with a meet-high 235.5 points. Riverview finished in a close second with 220 and Monroe took third with 159.

Plymouth (159) finished fourth followed by Woodhaven (155), Edsel Ford (124.5), Allen Park (124), Cabrini (85) and Erie Mason (66).

Jamie Williams and Garrid Blair finished first and third for the Bears in diving, Jesse Knowles won the breaststroke and the team of Knowles, Sean Pearce, Tom Martin and Collin Olson took first in the 400 freestyle relay.

Nolan Rochon took third in the 500-free, Nicolas Guthrie finished fourth in the butterfly and 50-free and Dakota Roehler finished fourth in the 200-free for the Bucs.

David Erickson had a solid day for the host Warriors and turned in a first-place finish in the 200-free and a second in the butterfly.

Seventh-place Allen Park got a first-place finish from Sean Flanigan in the 500-free while Will Marosi finished third in the butterfly and Michael Burnham took third in the backstroke.

Cabrini’s Erik LaCroix finished second in diving for the top Monarch finish.

Bears keep winning

Roosevelt followed up its Warrior Invitational championship with a pair of dual meet victories last week.

On Tuesday, the Bears defeated a talented Riverview team 100-86.

Roosevelt won 11-of-12 events, but the deep Bucs took a number of seconds, thirds and fourths to remain close.

Tom Martin (50-free, butterfly), Collin Olson (100-free, 200-free) and Jesse Knowles (200 IM, breaststroke) were all double-winners for the Bears while Garrid Blair, Mike Pugh and Carter Waggoner swept diving.

Sean Pearce set a pair of personal bests with his winning time in the 500-free and his second-place finish in the 200-free.

Olson, Danny May, Martin and Knowles teamed to win the medley relay and Olson, Pearce, Martin and Knowles took first in the 400 freestyle relay.

“This meet was very competitive,” Roosevelt Coach Sue Alt said. “Riverview has some great sprinters, but our frontline swimmers took first in all events except the 200 free relay, as Riverview hammered us with a 1-2 finish.”

Riverview Coach Sean Kelly had two swimmers from his “A” grouping in the 200 freestyle swim on the “B” lineup to heighten their chances at going 1-2 in the event.

It worked.

The “B” team of Morgen Gardocki, Alex Guthrie, Alex Somerset and Nicolas Guthrie touched-out the team of Dakota Roehler, Nick Diroff, Caleb Menna and Ryan Pickell to complete the 1-2 finish.

“Going into the relay, we were down 18, but we picked up 10 points to get within eight and in the next event, we got within six,” Kelly said. “We knew going in what we had to do. She just has three or four guys who are better than ours.

“We threw everything at them. To be down that much halfway through, it says a lot about their character that they kept fighting and kept pushing.”

On Thursday, the Bears again took 11-of-12 events in a 96-77 victory over Taylor Co-op.

May took first in the 200 IM and breaststroke, Knowles won the 50-free, Martin won the butterfly, Olson took the 100-free, Robert Shockley won the 500-free and Evan Perovich was tops in the backstroke.

Jamie Williams, Pugh and Waggoner swept diving and the Bears collectively swept the relays with wins in the medley (Olson, May, Martin, Knowles), the 200 freestyle (Olson, May, Martin, Knowles) and the 400 freestyle (Pearce, Knowles, Martin, Olson).

Trojans roll

Trenton traveled to Wayne Memorial on Tuesday and came home with a dominating 119-59 win.

Another balanced effort led to a Trojan victory as eight different swimmers won individual events for the Downriver League power.

Thomas Wolsek won the 200-free, David O’Donnell took the 200 IM, Adam Friedman paced the 50-free, Tyler Stawowczyk was best in the butterfly, Michael VanPaepeghem won the 100-free, Colin Westrate led the backstroke, Alex Ginn won the breaststroke and Shane Danyko was tops in diving.

The Trojans also turned in first-place finishes in the medley relay (Westrate, Stawowczyk, Alexi Kakaris-Porter, VanPaepeghem) and the 200 freestyle relay (O’Donnell, Wolsek, VanPaepeghem, Johnny Diehl).

Tyler Martin (200-free) and Josh Bronson (backstroke) each turned in second-place finishes and personal-best times.

The Trojans will travel to Woodhaven on Tuesday and will host Lincoln Park in their final dual meet of the season on Wednesday.

Carlson tops in tri-meet

Allen Park hosted a tri-meet that featured Cabrini and Carlson on Thursday and the Marauders pulled out a pair of victories.

Carlson defeated host Allen Park 91-89 and Cabrini 120-65.

The tight finish between the Marauders and Jags came down to the last event as Carlson trailed by four points before taking first and third in the 400 freestyle relay to pull ahead.

Matt Trombley, Matt Anderson, Matt Diehl and Thomas Jozwiak took first in the final event and the “B” team of Ryan Owen, Luke Demick, Jacob Mastrogiacomo and Alec Penland finished third.

Other Carlson winners included Diehl in the 50-free and butterfly, Craig Skinner in the breaststroke, the 200 freestyle relay team of Trombley, Skinner, Penland and Anderson and the medley relay group of Jozwiak, Skinner, Diehl and Anderson.

Trombley and Owen went 2-3 in the 200-free, Skinner finished second in the 200 IM, Jozwiak finished second in the backstroke and Anderson was runner-up in the 100-free.

Allen Park’s Sean Flanigan was a double-winner in the 100-free and 200-free, Will Marosi won the backstroke and was runner-up in the 200 IM, Tony Vinco finished second in the breaststroke and Tony Cooper posted a personal-best swim in the breaststroke.

“It was a tough loss,” Allen Park Coach Tyler Card said. “Our guys swam great considering where we’re at in training.

“Senior night is always a fun night, but with nine senior, it’s a reminder of the kind of rebuilding we’re going to have to do this offseason.”
