WRESTLING: Back-to-back district titles for Trenton (PHOTO)

Trenton will make the trip to team wrestling regionals for the second-straight year after earning a second straight district championship in New Boston on Thursday.

The Trojans defeated Huron League powers Huron and Riverview at Huron High School to bring home the district trophy.

In the district finals, Trenton tallied five pins on their way to a 46-24 victory over Riverview.

Maverick Johnson (119 pounds), Nolan Rickman (125), Gabe Wykle (160), Shane Danyko (171) and Tyler Purcell (189) all recorded pins against the Bucs while Brad Boler (130) and Tom Stackpole (285) each won by void.

Ian Collier (112) also won by major decision for the Trojans.

Riverview winners included Kyle Terrell (215) by pin, Brandon Garcia (145) by void and Marina Goocher (103), Teddy Lossing (135), Victor Korkis (140) and Dakota Martin (152) all by decision.

“We were coming here just looking to wrestle hard and hope for the best,” Riverview Coach Jason Dodd said. “The guys wrestled hard and I couldn’t really ask for more tonight.”

The road to the district finals was difficult for both Trenton and Riverview as each semifinal matchup came down to the last match.

The Trojans had a difficult draw in the semifinals, but persevered in a 39-30 victory over Huron.

Huron went unbeaten in the Huron League and were expected by many to claim its third-straight district title on Thursday, but the Trojans ruined things for the host Chiefs.

“The big key for that match (was) we were losing on decisions,” Trenton Coach Tom Bluhm said. “We turned around and ended up getting six pins. They only had two pins. That was the difference.

“You lose a couple matches and you only lost by three, that’s six points.”

Trenton led 36-24 with two matches remaining, but Huron’s Deion Copely kept hope alive for the Chiefs with a pin in the second-to-last match with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period.

Stackpole and the Trojans stood tall in the final match after the Trenton heavyweight outlasted Huron’s Mike Long 4-1.

Johnson, Rickman, Purcell, Danyko, Dean Noffsinger (140) and Vince Bartaway (145) all picked up pins for the Trojans.

Huron’s Logan Ritchie (171) won by pinfall, Joe Ferguson (135) won by technical fall, Judah Caballero (103), Jon Wellman (112) and Eli Caballero (125) won by major decision and Justin Collins (152) won by decision.

“With seven seniors, this is their last time around,” Bluhm said. “They were really fired up and they wrested really great. We know they have a really good team and we were fortunate enough to score a few more points.”

On the other side of the gym, Riverview and Carlson battled to a 40-40 tie and the Bucs were awarded the victory on the eighth tiebreaker based on the total amount of first-points scored (Riverview 14, Carlson 12).

“It was the closest wrestling meet that I’ve ever been a part of,” Carlson Coach Lance Hassell said. “I have been involved in many meets that were decided by different tiebreaker criteria in high school and college meets, but I don’t recall any meets going this deep into the criteria.”

The Bucs held a 40-28 lead with two matches remaining, but back-to-back pins by Carlson’s Zach Underwood (215) and Nick Carlson (285) tied the final score and kept scorekeepers busy minutes after the final buzzer.

Goocher, Lossing, Korkis, Garcia, Josh Wojtowicz (160) and Marcus Wright (189) all won by pin for the Bucs while Matthew Rossi (171) won by major decision.

Travis DeRossett (112), Billy Gibson (125) and Paul Sawicki (152) all picked up wins by pinfall for the Marauders while Mason Brott (112) won a major decision and Ahblaza Zavala won by void.

Trenton will travel to Tecumseh for the team regional Wednesday to take on league rival Melvindale.
