WRESTLING: Melvindale tops Allen Park in district finals

It was an all Downriver League final Thursday night in Romulus as Melvindale knocked off Allen Park for its first District wrestling crown in recent memory.

No one in the gym could remember the last time Melvindale won a District championship, despite that they won in convincing fashion, posting more than 100 points combined in the two dual meets.

The Cardinals knocked off league rival Allen Park in the 57-21 finals. It was the fourth time that the two teams faced each other in a dual, all with very similar outcomes. Melvindale beat the host Eagles 56-12 to get to the finals. Allen Park beat Detroit Caesar Chavez 47-28 to earn its birth in the finals.

“We’ve reached our season goals,” Cardinals coach Faisal Munassar. “Now we have to set bigger goals.”

Munassar said that he was proud of his for staying strong throughout both meets. Half of the team went 2-0.

“I’m very happy for what the boys did,” he said. “Hopefully it will be good for them in the individual tournament.”

Undefeated wrestlers on the day included Matt Cerme (103 pounds), Ramzy Youseff (112), Amir Munassar (119), Andrew Barron (135), Luis Perez (152), Manny Wolden (171/189) and Kyle Blevins (189/215).

Jaguars coach Dave Bearden was happy with his team’s performance as well.

“We handled Chavez pretty well,” he said. “Melvindale’s beat us four times now. We just got out wrestled, but we’re young. We had a coaching transition this year, we had to get to know each other.”

Double match winners for the Jags included state-ranked Sean Speer (125), Jake Chapman (140), Tony Dunlap (160) and Robbie Brown (171).

Willy Llamas went 1-1 for Allen Park by posting a technical fall against Chavez and then losing 1-0 to Baron in the finals.

“Baron’s tough,” Bearden said. “He’s been beating us up all year with other wrestlers, so losing one nothing and being in the match was great.”

Melvindale will travel to Tecumseh for the team regional Wednesday. They will face league rival Trenton who upset New Boston Huron Thursday night.
