Days after the Allen Park hockey team suffered a tough loss to Southgate, the team bounced back with a dominating 8-0 victory over Notre Dame Prep.
The Jags mercied Prep in the third period, after 45 total minutes of play.
After a 4-1 loss to the Titans, the Jags went back to practice and got back to the basics.
“We went in and went back to a lot of basics,” Coach John Brithinee said. “We made some moves with our lines, and basically called some players out and they responded quite nicely.
“We’ve also responded with a couple of nice practices (and) we hope that translates into a good showcase.”
The changes worked, and Allen Park jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first period, and added two more in each of the next to periods before the game ended.
David Pischke led the way for the Jags with his natural hat trick in the opening period.
The Jags had a 1-0 lead, and Pischke netted three in a row to cap off the scoring in the first 17 minutes.
The feat was extra special because it was Pischke’s first game back after being diagnosed with mono, and sitting almost 10 games.
Pischke also finished the game with two assists and ended up plus-six on the night.
Other goals came from Nick Kelly, Nick Metropoulos, Richie Pincowski, Aaron Porter and Austin Schultz.
Brithinee said the energy of his team helped them to their victory and they talked about keeping it up between periods.
“Basically between periods, it was all about keeping up our tempo,” he said. “Keep doing what we’re doing and forcing them to make mistakes.
“Our fore check was working quite well, and it was because of that energy.”
Brithinee was also happy with the return of several of his players.
Not only was the game Pischke’s first game back, but it was also Tom Snyder’s first game back after suffering a broken hand, and the first game that Porter was able to play the whole game, after suffering a foot injury.
As the Jags move forward, they will prepare for the final games of the season before playoffs start.
Thursday they kick off the MIHL showcase at Kennedy Ice Arena in Trenton.
In the remaining regular season, the team will face Saline and in-city rival Cabrini, as well as play in an outdoor game at Clark Park against the Dearborn Unified team.
The game will be at 2:00 on Feb. 16.
Brithinee hopes to keep his team focused on the positive aspects as playoffs draw near.
“We’ll probably implement a couple little things,” Brithinee said. “A lot of focus is on getting ourselves up and ready to go.
“A lot of the same, but at the same time, trying to amp it up a little bit. Hopefully we’re gonna show up with a lot of emotion and a lot of energy. You need that in the playoffs and we gotta start doing that prior to the playoff games.”
