Last week, the Grosse Ile girls’ basketball team defeated SMCC 42-25 for the second time in 10 days to stay near the top the Huron League standings.

Coach Sandy Tobin’s team jumped out to a 15-3 lead after the first quarter, and a team effort by everyone put them up by 20 (40-20) after three quarters.

“Everyone played and contributed,” Tobin said.

Alex Carney led the team with nine points, followed closely by Madyson Jankowski with eight points and four assists.

“We are so balanced in play that everyone is close with their statistics,” Tobin said. “It is so nice to have a good passing team and they are not selfish.

“It is why we are having success and we continue to get better.”

The Red Devils pushed their win streak further with a dominating 49-12 victory over Jefferson on Jan. 31.

Carney led the team again with 13 points and nine rebounds.

“I was happy with the tam’s defense, (but) we still need to do some work on the free throw line,” Tobin said.
