As the second part of the Downriver League schedule got underway, the Woodhaven girls’ basketball team stayed at the top of the standings with a victory over Roosevelt.

The Warriors hosted the Bears and defeated them 93-61 in a hard fought-game.

Both teams had a great effort with players on both sides scoring and making plays all night, and the Bears had a really good night on defense.

The Woodhaven coaching staff thought the game was played how a basketball game should be played and was excited that the teams combined for more than 150 points.

Keeping up with their strong season, the Warriors had a host of players contribute to their victory.

Whitley Currie led Woodhaven with 23 points and seven boards.

Cassie Breen followed close behind with 19 points and Brianna Brennan added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Salina Shubik finished the night with 10 points, Hailey Liedel had nine, Allison Manning scored eight and Lyndsay Brennan finished with five.

Jaclyn Wallace and Erin Marvaso each scored three points.

The Warriors took on Allen Park last night and will host Trenton on Friday.

The 11-3 (9-1 DRL) Titans also remain at the top of the Downriver League on a quest for a league title.

On Friday, Anderson hosted Allen Park and defeated the Jags 51-40.

Coach Larry Sakalas has been stressing the importance of a fast start to help secure wins and what a fast start his team got on Friday.

The Titans jumped out to an 18-2 lead after the first eight minutes.

Allen Park had a rough first quarter, shooting 1-for-12 and giving up 14 points in the paint, but turned things around to outscore the Titans 10-7 in the second, but still trailed 25-12 after the first half.

The teams alternated outscoring each other throughout the second half as well when the Titans won the third quarter scoring 14 points to the Jags’ 9 and Allen Park turned around and scored 19 points to the Titans’ 12 in the final eight minutes.

The game was parents nights for Anderson and everyone got a chance to play.

Sakalas said he is pleased with the way his team has performed lately and has been working with some new lineups.

Recently, he has been mixing starters in with the bench members to start to prepare for next season, and the changes have worked out well.

Amani Corley led the team with 14 points. Tinara Moore recorded a triple-double of 12 points, 10 blocks and 12 rebounds and Sarah Kircos finished the night with 10 points.

The Jags were led by Erin Fish with 13 points and five rebounds.

Amy Trionfi (nine points), Olivia Keeley (eight points, four rebounds), Casey Bowdell (two points, four steals, five rebounds), Hailey Lazarek (six points, four rebounds) and Kailee Paris (two points, three rebounds) all contributed to the scoring effort.

Allen Park Coach Chuck Perez noted that Keeley and Paris had a strong game.

Earlier in the week, Allen Park hosted non-league Farmington and won 44-39.

The Jags got off to a solid start and led 14-8 after the first quarter. They were outscored 9-4 in the second and led by only one point going into the second half.

The game remained close, but Allen Park outscored Farmington 26-22 in the final two quarters to secure the win.

“The girls executed the defensive game plan,” Perez said. “They stuck with it the whole game and were very disciplined.”

Trionfi had an excellent game, according to Perez, and led the team with 15 points.

Becca DuVall recorded 10 points and six rebounds, Bowdell had seven points and 11 rebounds and Fish finished with eight points.

“Casey did an excellent job running the offense and keeping Farmington from having second chance shots by grabbing nine defensive rebounds,” Perez said.

The Jags hosted the undefeated Warriors last night and will host a strong Carlson team on Friday.

The Titans traveled to Carlson last night with hopes of continuing the same way they have been playing as of late.

Sakalas’s team planed to limited the shot opportunities of Sarah Carlson and Kristina Poole, while making sure they kept up their intensity and focus.

“In order to give ourselves a chance at the league title, we can’t have any slips,” Sakalas said. “They can beat us if we don’t play them tough.”

The Titans travel to Truman on Friday to take on the Cougars.

Truman will be coming into the week riding off of two wins from last week.

On Friday, the Cougars defeated Lincoln Park 49-31.

Truman took a 13-9 lead after the first eight minutes, and did not allow the Rails to score more than nine points in any of the remaining quarters en route to the victory.

April Micheaux got the Truman offense started by scoring six points in the first quarter, and after getting her second foul of the game halfway through, Liaja Hodge was substituted in and picked up where

Micheaux left off, scoring five points.

The Cougars continued the efforts in the second quarter when Caprice King got the offense started right away.

Kadie Lee was valuable in the second and held Lincoln Park’s top scorers scoreless with her defensive efforts.

Truman Coach Chad Putnam felt that King and Hodge provided the team with a big lift in the first half of play.

“Both of those players were able to enter the game in a reserve role and immediately assert themselves into being key offensive players for us on the floor,” Putnam said.

“In addition, both players did a good job of rebounding the basketball throughout the game.”

Lincoln Park pulled the momentum to their side early in the third quarter, and outshot the Cougars 8-7, but Micheaux reentered the game in the fourth quarter, after running into foul trouble, and scored eight points to help secure the Truman victory.

Overall, Putnam said he was pleased with his team’s effort on the night, especially the work from the bench.

All 11 girls dressed for the game had an opportunity to play, and the players that entered the game in a reserve role accounted for a combined 20 points.

“The players coming off the bench in this game were able to immediately make an impact on the game on both the offense and defensive side of the basketball,” Putnam said.

Micheaux led the team with her double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Hodge recorded seven points and 12 rebounds, King had six points and five rebounds and Judah Frazier finished with five points and four steals.

Ciara Bush had four points, and Lee finished with three.

Earlier in the week, the Cougars defeated non-league Dearborn Fordson 62-49.

Truman outscored its opponents 33-23 in the first half, and after a tough third quarter brought the game within three points, the Cougars turned things around to outscore Fordson 23-13 in the final eight minutes for their victory.

Chelsea Bedwell got the offense started early, scoring six points in the opening quarter. Three point baskets from Frazier and Bush helped to extend the Cougar lead.

In the second quarter, Truman furthered its lead after increasing the defensive pressure and working through the low post.

Micheaux paced the Cougars with seven points in the quarter.

“The second quarter was key for us,” Putnam said. “We were able to increase the tempo of the game and use our defensive pressure to give us some opportunities to score.”

The Truman scoring went stagnant in the third quarter and the Cougars only scored six points to Fordson’s 13 and only led 39-36 after three quarters.

“During the third quarter, we had some difficulties with our selection of shots that we were taking,” Putnam said. “Some of the girls got comfortable with the lead that we had and started taking some shots that were ill advised.”

Putnam gave the Tractors credit for going a nice job of rebounding in the third quarter to help pull the score close.

The Cougars got refocused as a team in the final quarter to get back to the way they had played earlier in the game to give them their lead.

Micheaux netted nine points, Frazier chipped in seven points and Bedwell added four in the fourth quarter to give Truman their victory.

“Those three players are the top scorers on our team, and they did a good job of taking quality shots and converting them into points,” Putnam said.

Putnam was especially pleased with the efforts from Frazier.

“She has been struggling as of late, but she did a real nice job of playing a well rounded game,” he said. “Her 14 points during the game were a huge part of our victory.”

Included in Frazier’s 14 points were three three-pointers.

Micheaux led the team with another double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Bedwell finished with 12 points and five rebounds, Diamond Thomas had four points and three assists and Bush and Lee each finished with three points.

The Cougars are now 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the Downriver League.

Last night they traveled to Melvindale to take on the Cardinals and on Friday they host Anderson.

On Friday, Melvindale traveled to Kennedy where they defeated the Eagles 54-51 in overtime.

In an extremely close game, neither team held more than a six point lead at any time, and Melvindale only led by one point, 19-18 at the half before a 42-42 game forced halftime.

Melvindale Coach Tom Schick described the contest as a little “too sloppy” with many fouls and turnovers.

Between the teams there were 59 fouls called and the Cardinals had two girls foul out, while Kennedy had four.

Melvindale had a hard time stopping Asia Page and Taylor Cole, Kennedy’s top scorers.

“They were both very aggressive to the basket,” Schick said. “Their height gave us problems on the boards, but we gave them problems in the open floor getting steals.”

Melvindale’s leading scorer, Auriel Harris struggled with both her shot and free throws, but still found a way to score 35 of her team’s points. She also contributed 10 steals and nine rebounds.

Schick said the ball was all in her hands in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“She is such a great ball handler and when we need to hold the ball, no one does it better than Auriel.”

Paige Filipowski chipped in nine points and the rest of the girls gave a strong effort in the team’s first road win of the season.

Schick was pleased with his team’s win and said the best play of the day came in overtime.

Bethany Nutter was guarding Page low in the post and Page was leaning on her. When the Eagles threw the entry pass to Page, Nutter pulled the chair out on her and when Page caught the ball, she lost her balance and walked out of bounds.

“That was the game winning stop,” Schick said.

Page led the Eagles with her double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Cole with 13 points.

“It was a tough loss, but the girls played hard,” Coach Tish Martin said.

Last night, the Cardinals hosted Truman and will travel to Lincoln Park on Friday.

The Trojans took on Carlson in a hard fought game on Friday and defeated the Marauders 33-30.

The Marauders took a 12-7 led after the opening quarter but the Trojans turned things around and held Carlson to 13 points in the second half.

Carlson Coach Phil Carlson said the game came down to the Trojans just wanted a win.

“We did not play very well and Trenton just simply wanted it more than we did,” he said. “Our defense was pretty good, but we could not score (and) Trenton’s man to man D really hurt us.”

The Trojans outscored their opponent in the last three quarters, and Coach Rob Sauter called the win a total team effort.

Paige Machnacki led Trenton with 12 points, seven of them in the fourth quarter. She also finished with seven rebounds.

Stephanie Galczyk recorded seven points and six rebounds, and Aevah Hebda had six points and five rebounds.

Rachel Arnold had six rebounds and took two charges and Barb Czarnecki had four assists, four steals and three blocked shots.

Sauter said Czarnecki spurred the defensive effort in the second half with assistance from Hebda and Galczyk, and said Megan Benoist did a good job off the bench.

The Marauders were led by Sarah Carlson with 15 points.

Carlson hosted Anderson last night and will travel to Allen Park on Friday, while the Trojans hosted Kennedy last night and travel to Woodhaven on Friday.
