All Basketball - Boys Stories
The Cabrini boys’ basketball team climbed over the .500 mark last week with a pair of victories over Detroit Cristo Rey and Macomb Lutheran North.
On Tuesday, the Monarchs earned a first-round knockout in a 45-11 drubbing of Cristo Rey.
Cabrini wasted little time distancing itself and blew the doors off the game early with a 20-0 lead after one quarter.
The stat sheet was filled for Cabrini as 10 Monarchs scored at least two points, led by Robert DeBlander with eight.
On Friday, the Monarchs faced a much stiffer test in league opponent Lutheran North, but managed to prevail in a 51-50 nail-biter.
Cabrini led 26-22 at the half, but Lutheran North shortened the deficit to one point entering the fourth quarter after a 15-12 advantage in the third.
The score remained close throughout the final eight minutes and the Monarchs held on to avenge a 63-55 loss to Lutheran North in the Catholic League opener on Jan. 4.
Ian Wagner led the Monarchs with 18 points, six steals, three assists and two blocks.
Sean David had 13 points and three steals and Andrew Smith recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Cabrini (7-6, 3-3 Catholic League) traveled to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes on Tuesday and will host Royal Oak Shrine on Friday.
Richard drops two
Gabriel Richard fell in a pair of tough Catholic League games last week with 11-point losses Everest Academy and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood.
On Thursday, a lopsided third quarter doomed the Pioneers in a 41-30 loss to Everest Academy.
Richard led 20-10 early in the first half, but a 10-2 Everest run cut the Pioneer lead to two, 22-20, entering the half.
Everest took over in the third quarter and outscored the Pioneers 17-5 to jump ahead with a double-digit lead that it would never relinquish.
“They opened the second half with a 9-0 run and we turned the ball over four-straight times,” Richard Coach Kris Daiek said. “We knew they were going to come out and be physical in the second havel and we just didn’t respond very well.”
Jacob Camilleri led the Pioneers with 12 points and Tyler Blaszczak scored all eight of his points in the first half.
Still suffering some ill-effects from Thursday’s loss, the Pioneers fell to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 57-46 on Friday.
“It was a tough game to play,” Daiek said. “Our kids put so much into Everest and going into this game I was worried about our kids mentally.”
Richard trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but chipped away in the second half to get within four points.
A turning point in the game came when the Pioneers missed a layup that resulted in a fast-break opportunity and eventual layup for Cranbrook for a momentum-stopping four-point swing.
“That kind of changed the complexity of the game,” Daiek said.
Camilleri was the top Richard scorer with 13 points and Blaszczak and John Lemieux each had seven.
Richard (4-9, 2-3 Catholic League) host Detroit Cristo Rey on Tuesday and will travel to Marine City Cardinal Mooney on Thursday.
