With seven of their eight Downriver League wins coming by more than 10 points, the Truman Cougars have looked unbeatable at times this season and seemed poised to run the table in league competition.

Anderson must not have gotten the memo.

The Titans traveled to the unfriendly confines of Taylor on Thursday and upset Truman 58-51 in the Cougars first league loss of the season.

Anderson battled throughout the first half and attacked the suffocating Truman matchup zone defense to a 21-21 tie after two quarters.

“Our kids handled it well and attacked the basket,” Anderson Coach Dave Pratt said. “Every punch they threw at us, we threw one right back.”

Anderson’s depth came into play in the second half and helped the Titans build a 39-36 lead after three quarters.

The Titans led by as many as nine points, but Truman clawed back to remain within a few possessions throughout the second half.

“Truman, of course being the good team that they are, fought back,” Pratt said. “One of the big differences late was that we hit our free throws.”

The Titans went 15-for-19 from the line with a number of those conversions coming in the final minutes.

Connor Phee led all scorers with 19 points.

Shane Freitag and Dejon Matthews each had 12 and Pratt also acknowledged Trey Harris for his effort controlling the game’s tempo at the point.

“The kids, of course, are going to be excited for that win,” Pratt said. “The excitement on their faces was something to see.

“They knew what the wins means for Southgate basketball.”

Aaron Foster-Smith (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Anthony Wartley-Fritz (11 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles while senior Devin Goodwell added four points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

Robert Whitehorn and Devain Newbill each scored eight for the Cougars.

On Tuesday, Truman hosted Allen Park and a key second quarter carried the Cougars to a 63-52 win over the Jags.

Allen Park led 13-10 after one quarter, but Truman outscored the Jags 25-11 in the second to build a 35-24 halftime lead.

The Jags cut the deficit to six points, 49-43, entering the fourth quarter, but Truman’s trademark defense held the visitors to nine points in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.

Four Cougars reached double-figures, led by Wartley-Fritz with 15 points 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Newbill scored 14, Foster-Smith had 12 points and 10 boards and Whitehorn also scored 12 in the win.

Trevor Simms led the Jags with 17 points.

Truman (10-3, 8-1 DRL) will open the second half of the league season on Thursday with a crossover game against Carlson.
