The Trenton hockey team put together a good effort in each of its last two games, but it was not enough against two of the best teams in the state.

On Saturday the Trojans lost 5-2 when Birmingham Brother Rice scored three times in the third period.

That loss came three nights after Trenton played hard but lost 5-1 to Novi Detroit Catholic Central.

Although pleased with much of the weeks work,. Trenton Coach Mike Turner was not happy with the finish against Brother Rice.

“It was a little disappointing they way that one went,” Turner admitted. “We played right with them and even led 2-1 in the second period.”

It was 2-all entering the third, but Rice score three time to claim the win.

Brother Rice outshot Trenton 35-22 in the contest.

Trenton’s goal came from Brad Teska in the first period and Justin Dunn in the second. Brenden Torolski and Aaron Arturi had assists.

The final score was 5-1 against Catholic Central a week ago, but Turner was nonetheless pleased with his team’s play.

“We played really hard and gave a god effort,” he said. “(Catholic Central is) a talented and deep team and we did not give in

“We competed hard. That’s all you can ask. We just came up short.”

Catholic Central led just 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after the second.

After the Shamrocks went up 4-0 in the third, Teska scored from Conor Cunningham for Trenton only goal. CC added one in the final minute of the game.

Trenton, now 10-8-1, heads into a three-game week and an important series of games, according to Turner.

“This is a big stretch of games for us,” he said. “We play three quality teams in winnable games and we need to build some momentum heading toward the playoffs.

Trenton plays Calumet Friday and Traverse City Central in the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase this weekend.

Before heading into those games, Trenton hosts Port Huron Northern tonight in the MIHL Night at the Showcase.
