The Flat Rock-Airport combined hockey team entered their St. Mary’s Catholic Central contest riding on a four game win streak, but were stopped short with their 9-1 loss.
A scoreless first period passed and goalie Mike Vella faced 15 shots, but the Jets could not keep the strong SMCC team off the board, and Coach Tim Ames said his team simply did not have the magic in the rest of the game.
Flat Rock-Airport scored its lone goal off a faceoff win where Alex Jennings found the loose puck in the crease.
Ryan Feroni and Austin Jacobs had the assists.
The team faces a strong Huron team tonight.
Cabrini wins
The Cabrini Monarchs ended a scoring and winning drought on Wednesday with a 5-3 victory over Ann Arbor Skyline.
The win avenges a 3-1 loss to Skyline from a week earlier and Coach Bill Alvis attributed the different result to the improved play of his secondary lines.
“We got some scoring from someone besides the Brendan Alvis-Jacob Mackie-Bradley Chavis line,” Alvis said. “I know that in the last three games, we’ve gotten a better effort from the team.”
Skyline led 1-0 after one period, but the Monarchs answered with three goals in the second for a 3-1 lead entering the third.
Tyler Adams scored Cabrini’s first goal unassisted. Bradley Chavis scored next on a shot assisted by Mackie and Brendan Alvis and Alvis closed the period’s scoring with a goal assisted by Chris Sukel and Sheldon Varhol.
Steve Hecmanczuk score a few minutes into the third period for a 4-1 advantage on a shot assisted by Sukel.
Skyline fought back with a pair of goals to pull within one score, but Adams scored his second goal of the game on an empty netter to ice it for the Monarchs.
Brett Kates allowed only one goal in two-and-a-half periods of play, but left in the third due to back spasms.
“He went through two-and-a-half periods of pain, but shut them down,” Alvis said. “He played exceptional for us.”
The Monarchs look to build off the win on Wednesday against Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.
