The Gabriel Richard girls’ basketball team pushed its record to 7-1 in CHSL AA Division play with a dominating 61-39 win over Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Jan. 31.

The Pioneers got off to a fast start and took a 16-4 lead after the first quarter.

Coach William Jones said the game was about finishing what the team began all those weeks ago in November.

“These girls came together then to commit to each other, to coaches and to themselves, to represent the school community proudly with their hard work, sacrifices and accomplishments this season,” Jones said. “Part of the measure for success in these efforts comes with the chance to have performances like this.

“If it results in a victory, then we know we have finished another portion of our journey together.”

Jones is hoping his team will continue their recent trend of starting games fast and taking an early lead.

At 10-2, Ann Arbor called a timeout, but Richard took a 14-2 lead before the adjustments began to impact the Ann Arbor game.

Ann Arbor did a nice job of repositioning their star player, Kora Dreffs behind the Pioneer defense and she finished the game with 20 points.

Richard was outscored in the second quarter, but outscored their opponent 30-19 in the second half to secure their victory.

Jones was pleased with his team’s shooting efforts. The team finished the night 12-for-15 from the foul line.

With the win over AAGR, the Pioneers clinch a share of the CHSL AA Division championship for the second consecutive year.

Jones saw a team effort in the win, with eight girls contributing points.

The Pioneers were paced by Ashley Henderson with her 26 points.

Kelly Henderson finished the night with seven points, all scored in the fourth quarter.

Jones said it was a great way to pick the team up and help secure the win.

Casey Lyons added six points, all scored in the third quarter to help the Pioneers with their cushion.

Richard is now 9-5 overall on the season.

Last night the Pioneers traveled to Livonia Ladywood for a CHSL Crossover game.

The CHSL Tournament Playoffs begin this Saturday.

After falling to Richard early last week, Cabrini also fell to a tough Divine Child on Friday, 60-31.

Coach Mike Rozanski said he knew it would be a difficult task as the Monarchs do not match up well with the size of Divine Child.

“They were quicker than we expected, and we weren’t able to use pressure to create offense from our defense,” Rozanski said.

DC took a 12-0 lead before Cabrini got scoring started and led 18-5 after the first quarter.

The Monarchs played better in the second quarter, but were unable to cut the lead and trailed 29-16 after the first half.

“(They) really used their length well in their half court defensive sets to not allow extra offensive attempts, and made several contested three-point shots on their way to a 48-23 third quarter lead,” Rozanski said.

In the fourth quarter, DC further wore down the Monarchs on the inside to secure their victory.

Cabrini faced Notre Dame Prep last night and will start the CHSL playoffs on Saturday.
