After a long break, the Huron hockey team took back to the ice a week ago, and defeated Grosse Ile 7-3.
Drew Summit got the Chiefs on board just two minutes into the game after a nice assist from Devin Collins.
The Red Devils responded minute later on a goal from Avery Swain but the Chiefs took the lead once again and never let it go.
Before time ran out in the opening period, Steven Moore scored on a pass from Tyler Graves to give Huron a 2-1 lead going into the locker room.
The momentum kept up in the second period, and Marshall Hemme extended Huron’s lead on an unassisted goal just 48 seconds into the second period.
Two minutes later, Moore scored his second of the night to give the Chiefs a 4-1 lead. Collins had the assist.
But Grosse Ile bounced back with two goals and made it a 4-3 game until halfway through the final period.
Maci said his team took a bad penalty and allowed a Huron goal halfway through the penalty kill.
“They scored halfway through the penalty to make it 5-3 (and) we were never able to get back in the game,” Maci said.
Summit scored his second of the night on a power play, assisted by Josh Simmers. Jesse McGowan found the back of the net to extend the lead, assisted by Ian Graves, and Graves capped off the scoring with an empty net goal. He was assisted by Michael Laskey.
Jordan Bantau had a solid night in net for the win.
“They’re a pretty good team this year (and) they’ve got some kids that can skate pretty well,” Maci said.
Despite the losses, Maci is still pleased with the efforts of goaltender Reggie Vella.
“He has really come out and played well these past three, four weeks,” Maci said. “He’s been focused, keeping us in games, and continues to play well.”
The Red Devils are still struggling to play three full periods of hockey and are looking for a way to turn things around.
“Something’s gotta give and we’ve gotta learn to play a full 51 minutes,” Maci said. “Our goal is always to come out strong in the beginning, keep the game close and give ourselves a chance to win.”
Earlier in the week, Grosse Ile was shut out 5-0 by Farmington Hills, despite a strong effort.
“Although our boys played hard throughout the entire game, Farmington continued pressure for the full 51 minutes,” Maci said.
Despite being shut out, Maci was pleased with the efforts of Vella, who faced 54 shots.
“He was amazing,” Maci said. “Reggie has stepped up his game over the past two weeks.
“He has recorded two shutouts and has kept us in every game we have played, giving us a chance to win.”
Grosse Ile is off until Tuesday when they take on a strong Riverview team.
“They’ve (Riverview) got a lot of talent this year.
“We’re going to have to make sure that we finish strong and make sure we have a good third period.”
The Chiefs will take on the Airport-Flat Rock team tonight in their senior night and parents night game.
