The Carlson hockey team proved just how much of a threat it is last week, with wins over Dearborn Heights Crestwood and Riverview.

Over the weekend, the Marauders took on skidding Riverview and defeated the Bucs 6-4.

The game was the two team’s annual Breast Cancer awareness game and drew a good crowd from both sides.

The game started back and forth but Carlson got took the first lead of the game five minutes in when Timmy Rhoades sent a pass from the blue line to Ryan Holder who shot it in.

Minutes later, Riverview put itself on the board and tied the game.

But before the period ended, the Marauders took a 2-1 lead with a goal by Steve Trosell, his first of the night.

“Steve’s been working hard all year,” Carlson Coach Dennis Gundick said. “He’s always around there skating hard (and we) kept on telling him all year to keep working it they way you’re working it.”

The second period did not go as the Marauders planned and the Bucs came out and scored a power play goal, followed by two more unanswered goals.

Gundick knew they could not let the Bucs get a big lead and during the second intermission, reminded his team that they were just one shot away from making the contest a close game.

“(I said) stick to our game plan, focus (and) don’t try to do too much too quick,” Gundick said.

Two minutes into the final period, the Holder brothers got the job done and Pat made it a 4-3 game with an assist from Ryan.

Not long after, Trosell got his second of the night and tied the game. He was assisted by Drew Coleman.

The Holder brothers struck again in reversed roles to give the Marauders their scoring goal when Ryan netted one, assisted by Pat.

The goal came after the team lost Ryan for a few minutes when his skate broke, and he finished the game wearing one of his coaches’ skates.

CJ Yacuone capped off the scoring when he beat the Riverview defensemen, unassisted, to make it a 6-4 game.

Despite the lead, there was still 8:52 left to play after Yacuone’s goal but the Marauders never gave up their lead.

Late in the game, Carlson’s Tommy Kramer went out with a broken collarbone and hip injury after giving himself up to block a shot.

Gundick was pleased with the overall effort of his team and said his boys played strong and for a good cause.

“From the first drop of the puck to the end, you got your money’s worth,” Gundick said.

Earlier in the week, the Marauders took on Dearborn Heights Crestwood and mercied the Chargers 9-0 in the second period.

Gundick said the game started slow, but three goals from the Marauders in the first period, and six in the second finished the contest.

In a game where everyone contributed, Carlson saw goals from a host of players.

Ryan Holder led the team with five goals.

The other scoring came from Drew Coleman, Pat Holder, Anthony Martucci and Austin Bliznik

Yacuone finished the night with three assists.

The Marauders have had some rough games, but are always a strong opponent.

Early in the season, the team played close games and fell apart in the third quarter, but have turned things around.

Gundick is pleased with his team’s wins and says is shows other teams that the Marauders are here to be competitive and are going to shot up every day to compete.
