WRESTLING: Huron captures third-straight Huron League Championship (VIDEO)

Dakotah Dockter was the individual star, notching three first period pins for Flat Rock en route to a 215-pound championship at the Huron League tournament hosted by Monroe Jefferson Saturday.

Riverview was the surprise team, sitting in second place prior to the finals, where they dipped to fourth for first-year coach Jason Dodd. Despite falling back the Pirates won four-individual championships.

When it was all said and done though, nothing that Dockter, or any of the Pirates matmen could do was enough to stop Huron from winning its third-straight league championship. The Chiefs put 10 in the finals and placed 13 of the 14 wrestlers that suited up.

Huron finished the day with 218.5 points, well in front of runner-up Jefferson with 145. Flat Rock was third (124) followed by Riverview (119), Airport (114.5), Grosse Ile (57), Milan (54) and St. Mary’s Catholic Central (29).

“It was a pretty good day,” Huron coach Jake Shulaw said with a smile. “We’ve been doing a lot of things right.”

The Chiefs knew that the tournament was in the bag before the finals began, but still managed five champions, none more exciting that Sophomore Logan Ritchie’s 5-4 decision over Jefferson’s Hunter Dunn at 171.

Ritchie jumped out to the early 2-1 lead when he took Dunn down in the first minute of the opening period. He let Dunn loose immediately with neither scoring for the remainder of the period.

Ritchie chose bottom to start the second period and quickly escaped to take a 3-1 lead. Ritchie nearly scored a takedown midway through the period to take a commanding lead, but the official ruled the wrestlers out of bounds when the takedown happened. Dunn scored a takedown as the period expired to knot the score at 3.

Ritchie scored a 2-point nearfall early in the third period, at which point Dunn appeared to get a second wind. He escaped closing the score to 5-4 with about 1:20 to wrestle. Dunn nearly scored a go-ahead takedown twice, but was ruled out of bounds both times.

The home crowd erupted with boos as Ritchie was crowned the winner.

Other champions for Huron included, Judah Caballero (103), Jon Wellman (112), Nick Phelps (130) and Joe Ferguson (135). The five runners-up were Brandon Brooks (119), Eli Caballero (125), Justin Collins (152), Deion Copley (215) and Mike Long (285). Joe Cox (145), Ryan Skura (160) and Nathan Hayslip (189) each took fourth for the Chiefs.

Flat Rock had a good day placing nine of 11 wrestlers that weighed-in for a third place finish behind Jefferson. Dockter was the lone champion for the Ram with a 1:25 fall over Copley in the finals. It was his longest match of the day having earned falls in 0:53 and 0:18 earlier in the tournament.

Jacob Salter (140) and Austin Kittle (145) both finished with silver medals. Jason Ingram (135), Branson Hill (152) and Collin Fater (160) and Jacob Lambrix earned bronze medals while Jason Johnson (125) and Brandon Fisher (130) also placed.

“It’s nice to be competing,” Rams coach Larry Dishaw said. “We’ve got kids out this year and it’s paying off.”

Riverview had five wrestlers in the finals, including four champions but only placed two other wrestlers and fell from second to fourth during the finals.

Brandon Garcia (140), Dakota Martin (145), Mathew Rossi (160) and Logan Johnston (285) were all champions. Johnston beat Long, a defending league champion, 7-2 in the finals.

Teddy Lossing (135) was the lone runner-up for the Pirates. Marina Goocher (103) and Kyle Terrell placed fourth.

Grosse Ile only brought a few wrestlers, but still managed bring home a flight championship when Chucky Wright (152) slipped past Collins for a 5-4 decision. Wright scored an escape in the final three seconds of the match to make the final margin.

The Red Devils also got third place finishes from Michael Wickowski (119) and Kyle Karrar (145) who both lost only to the eventual champion at their weight. Tanner Coolsaet (112) placed fourth.
