SWIMMING: Roundup

Highlighted by a key win against a talented league opponent, the Trenton swim team went 2-0 last week with wins over Ann Arbor Greenhills and Carlson.

On Thursday, the Trojans traveled to Carlson and defeated the Marauders 102-81.

Both teams were fast in the water and combined to set six new pool records on the day.

Trenton’s medley relay team of Adam Friedman, Adam Mulka, Thomas Wolsek and Cody Pratt set a new mark with a first-place swim of 1:47.02.

David O’Donnell set a new record in the 200-free while Shane Danyko took first in diving and Vincenzo Guglielmetti won the 500-free for the Trojans.

Wolsek, Michael VanPaepeghem, Friedman and O’Donnell set another pool record with their first-place effort in the 400 freestyle relay.

Carlson winners included Craig Skinner in the breaststroke and 200 IM, Matt Diehl in the butterfly and 50-free, Thomas Jozwiak in the backstroke and Matt Trombley in the 100-free.

Skinner set a new pool record in the breaststroke (1:07.39), Trombley set a new mark in the 100-free (52.07) and Diehl tied the pool record in the 50-free (23.05).

Carlson’s 200 freestyle relay team of Trombley, Skinner, Matt Anderson and Diehl set a new pool record in its first-place finish with a time of 1:34.40.

“As I’m sure you guessed, last night was a very exciting meet,” Carlson Coach Amy Kleinsmith said. “Everyone on both teams had great swims.”

The meet also featured a Melanoma Cancer Research fundraiser and the schools combined to raise $1075.

On Tuesday, the Trojans defeated Ann Arbor Greenhills 132-51.

The Trojans will travel to Wayne Memorial on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Marauders traveled to Riverview and fell to the Pirates 105-78.

Riverview turned in over 30 season-best times in the meet and used its trademark depth to upend the top-heavy Marauders.

The medley relay team of Adam Ellington, Jacob Hosier, Nicolas Guthrie and Ryan Pickell led a 1-2 Riverview finish in the event for an early 10-point lead for the Bucs.

Hosier just missed out on a pair of MISCA cuts in his first-place swims in the 200 IM and breaststroke.

Nolan Rochon won the 500-free, Noah Ellginton and Nathan Smiley both qualified for regionals with a 1-2 finish in diving and Guthrie earned Riverview’s first individual MISCA cut in the butterfly.

Carlson had a pair of double-winners as Trombley took the 100-free and 200-free while Diehl won the 50-free and the butterfly.

Thomas Jozwiak won the backstroke and teamed with Trombley, Anderson and Diehl to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Trombley, Anderson, Alec Penland and Diehl also took first in the 200 freestyle relay.

Cabrini unbeaten at home

Cabrini improved to 3-0 at home last week with a 75-60 victory over Cass Tech.

The Monarchs took first in 11-of-12 events and continued their season-long trend of breaking school records by setting a pair of new ones on Tuesday.

Cabrini turned in six 1-2-3 finishes, including the 200-free (Conor McAfee, Sam Sabo, Lilly Thomson), the 200 IM (Devan Carmody, Josh Geschke, Paige Kulchinski), the 50-free (Jonah Globke, Robert Day, Joe Trohimczyk), diving (Brad Bartnicki, Peyton Lankford, Anaya Lechnar), the 500-free (Sabo, Nick Lucé, Liz Misovich) and the breaststroke (Ford Pariseau, Jacob Burke, Matt Bartnicki).

McAfee won the 100-free, Kirk Nicola won the backstroke and the Monarchs swept the relays with wins in the medley (Nicola, Pariseau, Globke, Day), the 200 freestyle (Globke, Paul Gass, Pariseau, Day) and the 400 freestyle (McAfee, Globke, Day, Nicola).

The efforts in the medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay were both good enough to set new school records.

“Both teams swam well on the evening,” Cabrini Coach Paul LaCroix said. “I think the competition brought out the best in both of us and (helped) to make the event an annual occurrence on our schedule.”

The Monarchs will take on Allen Park and Carlson on Thursday.

Jags top Taylor

Allen Park defeated Taylor Co-op on Thursday 94-74.

Freshman Michael Harris was a double-winner for the Jags with first-place swims in the 200-free and the backstroke.

Tommy Lareau took first in the butterfly and second in the breaststroke, Nolan Muzzin won the 500-free and was runner-up in the 50-free and Daniel Cayo won the 50-free for Allen Park.

Taylor’s Troy Busch took first in the breaststroke and second in the 200 IM while teammate Jacob Szczepanski finished second in the 200-free.

“Taylor has definitely been making huge amounts of progress,” Allen Park Coach Tyler Card said. “Their young guys show a bright future for the program.”

Warriors split

After being decimated by injury and illness for most of the season, the Woodhaven roster is starting to come back around and the Warriors showed as much by going 1-1 in a tri-meet that featured Edsel Ford and Lincoln Park.

The Warriors defeated Lincoln Park 140-43 and fell to the Thunderbirds 109.76.

“We had great swims from a number of our younger swimmers,” Woodhaven Coach Tarran Johnson-Lemieux said.

Philip Menna, David Erickson, Wesley Moilanen and Zach Holt took first in the 400 freestyle relay thanks in large part to Menna dropping two seconds off of his previous best time in the 100.

“Phil also took fourth in the 50-free and 100-free, which is quite an accomplishment for a first-year sophomore,” Johnson-Lemieux said.

Moilanen, Alex Rodriguez, Holt and Erickson took first in the 200 freestyle relay and Erickson earned a pair of first-place finishes in the 200-free and butterfly.

Moilanen won the 200 IM, Holt finished second in the 200-free and backstroke and Ryan Wiencek was runner-up in the breaststroke and 500-free.

Woodhaven hosted the Warrior Invitational on Saturday which featured host Woodhaven, Allen Park, Cabrini, Edsel Ford, Erie Mason, Monroe, Plymouth, Riverview and Roosevelt.
