GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Gabriel Richard tops rival Cabrini once again (PHOTO AND VIDEO)

Two weeks after falling 50-35 to its biggest rival, the Cabrini girls’ basketball team traveled to Riverview looking for revenge on Gabriel Richard.

But the Pioneers, still riding a four-game winning streak, were ready and handled the Monarchs 43-29.

“I said to the kids, you can kill stats and throw the records out whenever you have a rival game,” Richard Coach William Jones said. “It certainly ended up proving to be that way.”

Cabrini outscored their opponent 12-3 in the final quarter and brought the game within 14 points, but the clock ran out before they could complete the comeback.

“I was concerned when we got down early because we’re not a team that can consistently put the ball in the basket,” Coach Mike Rozanski said after the loss. “When we got behind by more than double digits early- that’s a really tough way for us to go.”

The Pioneers started fast and took an early 6-0 lead with less than a minute gone by. They did not allow their opponents any points for the first three minutes of play.

“A fast start is something we’ve been trying to do,” Jones said. “We haven’t had as good a start like that in some time.”

Richard continued with their offensive push and outscored Cabrini 28-12 in the middle quarters.

The Monarchs found some good looks, but seemed to have trouble getting the points.

“I think they exposed one thing that’s really trouble with our team,” Rozanski said. “We’ll get open looks and we can’t knock them down.

“I thought we created some good offensive looks (but) just didn’t make the shots.”

With 3:10 left in the half, Emily Zgoda got a three-pointer to put the game within three, but Richard’ s Emily Cooper’s eight-point quarter kept the Pioneers on top.

Richard did run into some trouble identifying the Monarch defense, but talked about it between the halves.

“We didn’t have anyone on the floor identifying it,” Jones said. “We’ve gotta identify the defense better, or at the very least just call out what play you want to run, pick your moments, and we’ll go from there.”

Rozanski thought his girls rushed the offense and were unable to execute properly.

“I thought my kids rushed the offense,” he said. “He put a big emphasis on his transition defense and I just couldn’t get my kids to get out and run.

“I wanted to make sure we shut down their transition defense (and) we did that late. We were able to get some charges against his back doors and that’s kind of what we wanted to do against them. It really came down to we just need to execute and make some shots and we didn’t.”

Richard did run into foul trouble in the final eight minutes and the Monarchs went 6-for-11 from the foul line in the quarter.

“I told the kids they’ve gotta be smarter,” Jones said. “We’re in a situation where we’re in the zone in a reactive defense. There’s no reason we should be getting a lot of fouls call on us unless we’re slow on shifts. It still came down to possessions and control and we were able to come away with it.”

The Pioneers saw contributions from seven different players and went 8-for-11 in the victory.

Ashley Henderson led all scorers with her double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. Ten of her points came in the third quarter.

Cooper finished the night with 10 points and five rebounds, and Kelly Henderson added eight points.

One of the Pioneers’ focuses was limited Zgoda’s shots.

“She’s the motor with which they run (and) we accomplished that well,” Jones said.

Despite the Pioneer defense, Zgoda was still able to get shots on net and finished the night with 10 points and two rebounds.

“She is my one true offensive threat,” Rozanski said.

Kendel Adamus finished with five points, and seven other players added to the score.

Despite the loss, Rozanski was pleased his team was there at the end of the game and said the young team will continue working as the final weeks of the season approach.

“I expected that we would be there at the end of the game,” Rozanski said. “I didn’t know that we’d win because you have to score to win and we have difficulty scoring.”

Jones gave the Monarchs credit.

“We had a little difficulty finishing it out in a crisp, clean fashion,” Jones said. “Certainly credit goes to Cabrini for keeping it in full gear the whole game long.

“Anytime we can get out of here with a win, we will take it.”
