GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Huron League roundup

The Flat Rock girls’ basketball team has spent this season setting and breaking school records.

After two more victories last week, the Rams are now 13-0 on the season and 8-0 in the Huron League.

On Jan. 22, Flat Rock defeated Airport 57-43.

The teams stayed pretty even through the first half and Flat Rock led 23-17 at the half.

“Airport played well the first half and we didn’t have many answers for their zone,” Coach Marc Villemure said.

Villemure switched up the lines in the second half and went with quicker guards on the perimeter and pressured the Jets more.

The switches worked and the Rams outscored their opponents 19-9 in the third quarter.

Morgan Kaiser led the team with 14 points, including two-three pointers. She also recorded three steals, assists and rebounds.

Paige Villemure followed with 13 points, including three three-pointers. She also brought in three rebounds, three blocks, four steals, and four assists.

RaeAnne Highers finished with nine points, all three-pointers.

Haley Boyer led the team in rebounds with 12, and also contributed eight points.

Later in the week, the Rams saw a much improved St. Mary’s Catholic Central but still defeated the Kestrels 51-37.

The Kestrels kept up with Flat Rock in the opening quarter and only trailed 27-23 after eight minutes.

“They handled our pressure well and shot a very good percentage from the floor early on,” Villemure said.

Paige Villemure had a solid night and led the team with 19 points. She also recorded seven rebounds, six steals and three blocks.

Breanna Keethler had eight points and six rebounds, and Hollie Rhodes and Morgan Villemure also played well with seven points each.

Boyer led the team again in rebounds with 11, and also brought in four points.

Flat Rock hosted Jefferson last night and will play host to Huron on Thursday.

Grosse Ile

The strong Grosse Ile team continued its winning ways with a pair of victories over Huron and Riverview last week.

On Jan. 21, the Red Devils took on Huron in a battle for second place in the Huron League.

Grosse Ile took an early 16-11 lead after the first quarter and led the remainder of the game.

The Red Devils had as especially strong second quarter, and outscored the Chiefs 11-4 to take a 27-15 lead at the half.

Alex Carney led all scorers with her double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Sarah Moehr finished the night with 10 points.

The Chiefs were led by Lissa Kowalewski with 12 points and eight rebounds. Kristin Wolber and Hailey Richardson each recorded 11 points.

Three nights later, the Chiefs had a crushing 44-21 victory over Jefferson.

Huron jumped to an early lead and led 17-2 after the first eight minutes.

Kowalewski once again led the Chiefs with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Alexa White contributed 11 points.

The Red Devils added another win to their book with a 45-25 victory over Riverview, their second of the season.

Grosse Ile only led 7-2 after the first quarter, but outscored the Bucs 27-12 in the middle quarters to help secure their victory.

The fourth quarter brought Riverview’s strongest offensive effort with 11 points, but they were unable to close the gap.

“We did not play well as a team mentally or physically,” Coach Marty Mucha said. “When you score 25 points in a game, you can’t expect to be many teams.”

Anna Vega led the Bucs with 15 points, six rebounds and seven steals.

The Red Devils were again led by Carney with another double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Megan Swick added 12 points.

“We are trying to start playing better on the defensive end and commit less fouls,” Tobin said. “It was a much better game for us on defense.”

Earlier in the week, Riverview fell 55-42 to St. Mary’s Catholic Central.

The Bucs led by two points after the first quarter and trailed by only 4 points after the third, but were unable to finish the game.

“We played hard but just couldn’t hit key baskets while MCC did,” Mucha said.

Vega led the team with her 14 points, and Michala Burke contributed 10 points.

Mucha and his team now play to focus on the remaining few weeks of the season as districts quickly approach.

“We are going to try and regroup and focus on playing hard for four quarters in this week’s games,” Mucha said. “If we can do that, good things will happen.”

Riverview hosted Airport on Monday and will host Milan on Thursday while Huron traveled to Milan Monday. The Red Devils hosted SMCC Monday and will travel to Jefferson on Thursday.
