GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Downriver League Roundup #1

The Woodhaven girls’ basketball team continued its dominating season on Friday with an overwhelming 83-47 victory over Carlson.

The Warriors focused on coming out with intense defense after a closer game than they would have liked with Roosevelt earlier in the week.

“We knew we were better than the effort we brought at Wyandotte,” Assistant Coach Rodney Scharboneau said. “We wanted to create that pace and we did that.”

Coach Doug Simmons had his team ready and they responded well to the Marauders.

Cassie Breen led the Warriors with 22 points, followed by Brianna Brennan with 19.

Hailey Liedel recorded nine points, Saline Shubik had seven, and Whitley Currie finished with six points. Erica Marvaso and Allison Manning had five points each.

Earlier in the week, Woodhaven was victorious over Roosevelt in a 48-31 game.

The Warriors did not secure their victory until the final quarter and led by only two points after the middle quarters, after starting the game tied at 8.

Roosevelt Coach Ron Adkins was pleased with his team’s effort in the game, particularly on defense.

“Our girls played extremely hard on defense,” he said. “Offensively, we did a good job of moving the ball, but did not score consistently enough to ever grab the lead.”

Despite the great effort, Adkins said that the talented Woodhaven team has set the bar high in the league and he found many aspects his team can improve on.

Amelia Czarnota led all scorers with 14 points.

Amber Smiddy brought in five points, and Hailee Trombley and Nicole Ostrowitz each recorded four points.

Adkins said the defense was a team effort led by Trombley, Ostrowitz, Smiddy and Abby DeSana, as well as everyone else who hit the floor.

Shubik continued her strong play and led the Warriors with 13 points.

Brennan recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists.

Breen got in early foul trouble, but came back late to score nine points. Allison Manning had six and Currie finished with four points and five rebounds.

The Bears bounced back quickly with a crushing 51-22 win over Truman on Friday night.

Despite a slow start, Roosevelt allowed only one basket from the Cougars in the opening quarter and took a 18-9 lead at the half.

“We came out ready to play and it showed,” Adkins said.

With three minutes to go in the first quarter, the Bears only had a 1-0 lead.

Truman’s leading scorers, April Micheaux and Chelsea Bedwell both picked up early fouls and sat for some of the quarter to stay out of foul trouble.

The Cougars’ only scoring in the quarter came from Diamond Thomas with two minutes remaining.

The Bears came out fast in the second half, scoring four points in just over a minute of play.

The Cougars substituted in five reserve players in hopes of getting their team going and despite having their best offensive quarter with nine points, they were still unable to stop the Roosevelt offense and gave up 18 points.

Truman’s troubles continued when they scored only one field goal in the final quarter. The team had free throw attempts to help get back in the game, but only finished 2-for-11 from the line in the quarter. The Cougars shot 8-for-26 on the night from the free-throw line and 7-for-35 from the field, while committing 25 turnovers.

“We got off to a slow start and we were never able to get any momentum in the game,” Coach Chad Putnam said. “Our shooting difficulties from the field and from the free throw line combined with our turnovers and difficulty getting a rebound really made things difficult in this game.”

Micheaux led the team with nine points and three rebounds and Ciara Bush contributed three points and two steals.

The rest of the Truman offense came from five players with two points each.

The Bears were led on both sides of the floor by Smiddy who did a great job defending and battling with Truman’s bigs and finished with 13 points.

“This was a breakthrough week for Smiddy,” Adkins said. “She has worked hard and is playing better each week.”

Czarnota finished with nine points and Josie DeGregorio played very well, finishing with six points, as did Alea Kainz.

Alyssa Mascia and Ostrowitz had good games and chipped in five points each.

Adkins said solid efforts came from Abby Hanna, Tara Poikey, Sydney Green, Tierney Runions and Hailee Howe.

Overall, Adkins said he was pleased with the efforts on the week.

“I hope our seniors are ready to lead us the rest of the way and finish strong,” he said.

The Southgate girls’ basketball team continued doing what they do best this week with two crushing wins over Kennedy and Carlson.

The Titans hosted Carlson on Jan. 22, defeating them 55-27.

Anderson used their game plan of always starting strong to take a 16-4 lead after the first eight minutes.

The Marauder offense missed some shots that could have made the game go differently, but the Titan defense did not allow more than nine points in any of the quarters for their victory.

Southgate powerhouse Tinara Moore dominated play starting right away in the first quarter.

She went 10-for-12 from the line and four-for-four in free throws to give her a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds just in the first eight minutes.

“She had a monster game,” Coach Larry Sakalas said.

The Titans netted 29 points in the middle quarters, while holding the Carlson offense to just 14 points.

“We just kind of continued what we were doing in the first quarter,” Sakalas said. “We were playing very good defense and working hard. We knew they were a game behind us in the league (and) we wanted to solidify the second place.”

Sakalas was happy with his team’s overall efforts and pleased the defense held the Marauder’s leader, Sarah Carlson to just seven points.

“She’s one of their better players,” he said. “Putting them in check was huge.”

When the Titans traveled to Taylor to take on Kennedy Friday, they found themselves down 12-6 after the first quarter, but quickly turned things around to take a 23-16 led at the half.

Anderson continued their strong efforts both offensively and defensively and allowed only 10 more points in, en route to their 51-26 victory.

“We just kind of turned it on them in the second half,” Sakalas said.

The Titans were led by Moore with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The rest of the scoring was a team effort with points from everyone on the roster.

The Titans now prepare for Allen Park on Friday and will be looking for a second victory of the season over the Jags and hope to limit Casey Bowdell’s offensive efforts.

“We’ll come out strong trying to control them defensively,” Sakalas said. “(We’ll) try to contain her (Bowdell) and limit her ability to score (and) go from there.”
