BOYS' BASKETBALL: Grosse Ile divides pair of home games

After a lengthy road trip, the Grosse Ile Red Devils returned home to mixed results after splitting a pair of home games last week.

On Tuesday, Grosse Ile opened its seven-game home stand against Milan and received a thrashing from the Big Reds 89-32.

“They’re really good,” Friel said. “They press, they’re really athletic and they’re big.”

Milan pressed early and often on Tuesday and the Big Reds jumped ahead 28-7 after one quarter and took a 53-16 lead into the half.

“I think we turned the ball over 15 times in the first half,” Friel said. “Combine that with the fact that we took quick, hurried shots and that’s what you get.”

“There was a stretch there where we struggled to get the ball past half court.”

McCarty led the Red Devils with 15 points and Andrew Mitroka had one of his best varsity games for Grosse Ile with eight points.

The Red Devils responded on Friday by prevailing in a tough, chippy Huron League battle against rival Flat Rock 53-41.

In a game that got increasingly more physical as it wore on, the Red Devils outlasted and eventually outdistanced themselves from the Rams for their fourth league win of the season.

Neither team could get much going offensively in the early going and the Red Devils carried a 7-4 lead into the second quarter.

Tyler London caught fire for Grosse Ile early in the second and knocked down three triples in the quarter’s first three minutes to help the Red Devils build an 18-9 lead with five minutes remaining in the half.

Flat Rock’s offense showed signs of life over the next five minutes, highlighted by six points from Justin Nickols, and the Rams pulled to within four entering the break, 21-17.

“I thought we started a little slow and it seemed like we were in a bit of a slow motion mode,” Grosse Ile Coach Bryan Friel said.

The Rams pulled to within three points two minutes into the third quarter, but the Red Devils used a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to extend its lead and take a 39-29 advantage into the fourth.

Tom Daly and Brian Christen each had six in the quarter for Grosse Ile while Flat Rock’s Mike Chickeral led the Rams with seven.

“Offensively, we’re doing a pretty good job,” Grosse Ile Coach Bryan Friel said. “When we get that ball moving and people moving, we’re a pretty good team.”

“Overall, we’re doing a pretty good job.”

The Red Devils held a lead near 10 points for the majority of a physical fourth quarter and London iced the game with 2:30 remaining with a big three-pointer, his fourth of the game, to give Grosse Ile a 51-37 lead.

“It’s really hard to win a basketball game when you’re scoring 40 points a game,” Flat Rock Coach Dave Bogataj said.

London had 16 points and five rebounds for the Red Devils while Christen added 11 points, five boards and four assists.

Danny McCarty, Grosse Ile’s leading scorer, was held without a point in the first half, but converted nine-of-11 free throw attempts in the second half and finished with 11 points. Daly had seven points and six rebounds and Keeton Ross had a solid night on the glass with 10 rebounds.

Chickeral led the Rams with 15 points and seven rebounds. Nickols had 11 points and four rebounds.

“It’s Huron League game,” Bogataj said. “Every game is pretty much like this and I was glad to see my guys play tough. Every Huron League game is like this.”

Grosse Ile (7-4, 4-2 Huron League) hosted Huron on Tuesday and will host Riverview on Friday.

On Tuesday, Flat Rock hosted Riverview and lost in overtime to the Bucs 53-49.

The score remained close throughout and regulation ended with a 45-45 tie.

In the extra period, Riverview outscored Flat Rock 8-4 for its second-straight Huron League victory after starting the league season 0-3.

Riverview’s Nolan Glime led the team in scoring and scored six of his team-high 13 points in overtime.

Max Mousouleas had 10 points and 17 rebounds for the Bucs while Greg Burris added 11 in the win.

Flat Rock (3-7, 2-4 Huron League) traveled to Carleton Airport on Tuesday.

Huron wins two

The Huron Chiefs remained tied with Grosse Ile at third place in the Huron League standings after a pair of close wins last week.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs hosted Carleton Airport and defeated the Jets in overtime 48-41.

The teams went into overtime tied 39-39 and Airport opened the scoring with a basket for a brief 41-39 lead.

After a Huron bucket tied the score, Karan Ghuman came up with a big steal that led to a three-point play for a 44-41 Chief lead.

Huron outscored the Jets 9-2 in the extra period.

“Once we got the lead, they got a little bit more aggressive and we stepped up the defense,” Huron Coach Joe Cieslak said.

Tony Flaim had 15 points and six rebounds in the win and Bill Ames had 11 points and eight boards.

On Friday, the Chiefs traveled to Riverview and halted the Bucs’ two-game winning streak with a 55-52 victory.

The Chiefs carried a 43-33 lead into the fourth quarter, but Riverview fought valiantly in the final eight minutes to make it close down the stretch by outscoring Huron 19-12 in the fourth.

“We just pulled close, but couldn’t get over the hump,” Riverview Coach Sam Lamb said. “Huron played really well in the second half and did a nice job of slowing it down.”

“They’re a real deliberate, smart, well-coached team and made shots when they needed them.”

While the victories may not have been textbook variety, Cieslak is pleased with the way his team fought adversity in a pair of close games.

“We could never deliver the knockout punch to either team and they kept hanging around,” Cieslak said. “When you let a team hang around, sometimes they come up and get you. Luckily, that didn’t happen in either game.”

Ghuman had 21 points and five rebounds in the win while Ames knocked down five triples for 15 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists.

Flaim added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Mousouleas led Riverview with 16 points and Khalil Neal scored 11.

Huron (5-5, 4-2 Huron League) traveled to Grosse Ile on Tuesday and will host Jefferson on Friday.

Riverview (2-9, 2-4 Huron League) hosted Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central on Tuesday and will be on the road Friday at Grosse Ile.
