HOCKEY: Trenton wins six of seven, Bears lose five (PHOTO)

The late-game goal bug bit the Trenton hockey team again last week in its battle with state-ranked Livonia Stevenson, but for the second time in 2013 Phil Pugliese was an overtime hero.

In a game played a week ago at Trenton, Stevenson tied the game at 3-all with a shorthanded goal with less than a minute to play in regulation.

But Trenton answered with Pugliese’s goal with less than a minute to play in overtime.

On the game-winning play, Quinn Preston swept into the Stevenson end and fired a hard wrist shot that the Stevenson goalie kicked aside.

But the puck bounced right to a cruising Pugliese, who took it at the top of the circle and snapped one over the goalie’s shoulder to give the Trojans the victory, their fifth in their last six games.

Trenton then made it six wins in seven games with a dominating 5-1 win over Warren DeLaSalle in Fraser on Saturday.

Trenton outshot the Pilots 21-1 in the first period and 53-20 for the game.

Andrew Lindsay and Pulgliese had first-period goals for Trenton, Justin Dunn had a second-period goal and Dunn and Preston scored in the third.

Andrew Sawyer and Brendan Torolski had two assists each.

“Their goaltender was really, really good,” said Trenton Coach Mike Turner. “They took three penalties in a row in the first period and it was a like shooting gallery out there, but he kept knocking them away.”

In Trenton’s net, Nick Ramirez stopped 19 of 20 DeLaDalle shots.

In the win over Stevenson, it was Garrett Carroll getting the start in goal and earning the win.

“He made the saves we needed and we played well in front of him,” said Turner.

Pugliese had two goals in that game, including the OT winner and Preston and Dunn had the others. Preston also had two assists.

Trenton is now 10-6-1 overall and 6-2-1 since Dec. 15.

“We said all along that this team was a work in progress and we’re starting to see some signs of them picking up the things we have been working on since the start f the year,” said Turner.

“We saw some real good things in the DeLaSalle game.”

Trenton will be sorely tested this week when Novi Detroit Catholic Central comes to town Wednesday and the Trojans hit the road to face defending Division 2 state champ Birmingham Brother Rice on Saturday.

Bears fall again

The Roosevelt hockey team is on a tough five-game losing streak after falling 3-1 to U of D Jesuit over the weekend.

The Bears held a lead for almost a full period after Aaron Robinson netted a power-play goal 9:57 into the opening period, after Jesuit was called for interference.

With 7:48 to play in the middle period, Jesuit tied the game with a goal from Mike Korte.

Both teams kept chipping away in the third period but Jesuit broke through when Craig Pefley netted his first of two in the period to give his team the lead.

In a last-minute attempt to tie the game, Roosevelt Coach Mike Quint pulled goalie Justin Armatis from the net, but the Bears were unable to capitalize, and with just two seconds left, Pefley netted his second of the night into an empty net.

The Bears will look to end their losing streak tonight when they host DeLaSalle.
