In a tough, chippy Huron League battle, Grosse Ile recovered from a tough home loss on Tuesday to defeat rival Flat Rock 53-41 on Thursday night at home.

In a game that got increasingly more physical as it wore on, the Red Devils outlasted and eventually outdistanced themselves from the Rams for their fourth league win of the season.

Neither team could get much going offensively in the early going and the Red Devils carried a 7-4 lead into the second quarter.

Tyler London caught fire for Grosse Ile early in the second and knocked down three triples in the quarter’s first three minutes to help the Red Devils build an 18-9 lead with five minutes remaining in the half.

Flat Rock’s offense showed signs of life over the next five minutes, highlighted by six points from Justin Nickols, and the Rams pulled to within four entering the break, 21-17.

“I thought we started a little slow and it seemed like we were in a bit of a slow motion mode,” Grosse Ile Coach Bryan Friel said.

The Rams pulled to within three points two minutes into the third quarter, but the Red Devils used a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to extend its lead and take a 39-29 advantage into the fourth.

Tom Daly and Brian Christen each had six in the quarter for Grosse Ile while Flat Rock’s Mike Chickeral led the Rams with seven.

“Offensively, we’re doing a pretty good job,” Grosse Ile Coach Bryan Friel said. “When we get that ball moving and people moving, we’re a pretty good team.”

“Overall, we’re doing a pretty good job.”

The Red Devils held a lead near 10 points for the majority of a physical fourth quarter and London iced the game with 2:30 remaining with a big three-pointer, his fourth of the game, to give Grosse Ile a 51-37 lead.

“It’s really hard to win a basketball game when you’re scoring 40 points a game,” Flat Rock Coach Dave Bogataj said.

London had 16 points and five rebounds for the Red Devils while Christen added 11 points, five boards and four assists.

Danny McCarty, Grosse Ile’s leading scorer, was held without a point in the first half, but converted nine-of-11 free throw attempts in the second half and finished with 11 points. Daly had seven points and six rebounds and Keeton Ross had a solid night on the glass with 10 rebounds.

Chickeral led the Rams with 15 points and seven rebounds. Nickols had 11 points and four rebounds.

“It’s Huron League game,” Bogataj said. “Every game is pretty much like this and I was glad to see my guys play tough. Every Huron League game is like this.”

Grosse Ile (7-4, 4-2 Huron League) will host Huron on Tuesday and Flat Rock (3-7, 2-4 Huron League) will travel to Carleton Airport that same night.
