Woodhaven's David Erickson turned in a pair of state-qualifying times last week in the 50-free and the butterfly.

Riverview remains unbeaten in dual meets after a 101-77 road victory over Erie Mason on Tuesday.

“That was the day where it was -15 degrees with the wind chill,” Riverview Coach Sean Kelly said. “Cold bus ride down and a warm pool. It was an interesting combination.”

Despite the frigid conditions outside, the Bucs remained hot in the water by tallying eight first-place finishes on the day.

Nicolas Guthrie placed first in the 50-free and the butterfly while Nolan Rochon won the 200-free, Jacob Hosier took first in the 200 IM, Ryan Pickell won the 100-free and Keith Stokely finished first in the backstroke.

After turning in a Division 3 state-qualifying time at The News-Herald Swimming and Diving Championships last Saturday, the 200 freestyle relay team of Pickell, Nicolas Guthrie, Phil Molino and Morgen Gardocki took first on Tuesday while Stokely, Dakota Roehler, Adam Ellington and Alex Guthrie won the medley relay.

The Bucs begin a gauntlet of tough opponents on Tuesday when they take on the Carlson/Anderson Co-op team.

Bears sweep Rails

Roosevelt took first in all 12 events on Thursday in the Bears’ 102-71 victory over Lincoln Park.

Double winners for the bears included Collin Olson in the butterfly and 200-free and Jess Knowles in the 200 IM and the breaststroke.

Other individual firsts came from Sean Pearce in the backstroke, Tyler Green in the 500 with a career-best time, Tom Martin in the 50-free and Dylan Fore in the 100-free.

Nick Sarna, Owen Jablonski, Martin and Fore teamed to win the medley relay, Martin, Olson, Knowles and Pearce won the 400 freestyle relay and Olson, Danny May, Cody Reichow and Fore took first in the 200 freestyle relay.

Garrid Blair led a 1-2-3 finish in diving to complete the Roosevelt sweep.

Carlson goes 2-0

Carlson/Anderson and Erie Mason traveled to Woodhaven on Thursday on Thursday and the Marauders posted a 2-0 record on the day.

Carlson/Anderson defeated host Woodhaven 107.5-62.5 and Erie Mason 113-63.

Top performances for the Marauders included Thomas Jozwiak’s first-place finish in the 200 IM and backstroke and Matt Diehl’s second-place finish in the 50-free.

Matt Trombley and Matt Anderson also provided valuable points in the 100-free as the duo went 2-3 in the race.

The shorthanded Warriors fell 90-86 to Erie Mason.

Woodhaven has been plagued with injury and illness all season which has led to the Warriors competing without a number of key swimmers.

“In addition, Erie Mason continually came from behind to out-touch our swimmers,” Woodhaven Coach Tarran Johnson-Lemieux said. “Yes, we would have had a better shot at winning if we had all of our swimmers, but I have continued to tell my guys that we can’t make excuses out of things we can’t control.”

“We should have defeated Erie Mason, but the Eagles consistently outperformed us and we lost by four points as a result.”

Johnson-Lemieux was complimentary of Woodhaven’s Downriver League opponent.

“Gibraltar-Southgate looked really good last night and I look forward to seeing the results of their meet again Allen Park in a couple weeks,” Johnson-Lemieux said. “I think those teams will match up well against each other and, in combination with the league meet, that meet will most likely determine who will take third in the league.”

David Erickson continues to be a bright spot for the Warriors this season and added to an already-impressive resume by turning in a pair of Division 2 state-qualifying cuts in the butterfly and 50-free.

Cabrini tops Crestwood

The Cabrini Monarchs continued their season-long trend of turning heads on Tuesday by winning 11-of-12 events in an 85-72 victory over Crestwood.

In Cabrini’s first-ever win over the Chargers, the Monarchs set two school records and turned in 34 person-best swims.

Conor McAfee and Sam Sabo went 1-2 in the 200-free and 500-free, Brad Bartnicki and Peyton Lankford went 1-2 in diving and Ford Pariseau, Jacob Burke and Matt Bartnicki went 1-2-3 in the breaststroke.

Kirk Nicola set a school record in the 200 IM and also took first in the butterfly while Robert Day won the 100-free and Katie Krawczyk took first in the backstroke.

Nicola, Pariseau, Jonah Globke and Day set a school record in their first-place finish in the medley relay and the Monarchs also got wins in the 200 freestyle relay (Globke, McAfee, Pariseau, Day) and the 400 freestyle relay (Nicola, Globke, McAfee, Day).

Cabrini will take on Cass Tech and Lincoln Park at Allen Park High School on Tuesday.
