WRESTLING: Huron wrestlers now 24-1 overall

Huron is unbeaten in Huron League

The Huron wrestling team remained undefeated in Huron League competition with a pair of dual meet victories over Riverview and Milan last week.

On Wednesday, the Chiefs defeated the Bucs 54-16 and Milan 49-25 in Riverview.

Huron double-winners included Judah Caballero (103 pounds), Brandon Brooks (119), Nick Phelps (125), Eli Caballero (130), Joe Ferguson (135), Logan Ritchie (160), Deion Copely (215) and heavyweight Mike Long.

At that same quad, Riverview defeated Flat Rock 44-32.

Teddy Lossing was Riverview’s lone wrestler to go 2-0.

On Saturday, Huron finished second at The 51st Annual Jim Mooney Williamston Wrestling Classic.

Anderson finished first with 183.5 points followed by Huron (177.5) and Saline (177).

Ritchie was Huron’s lone first-place finisher at 160 pounds and improved his season record to 36-0.

Other top Huron performers were Ferguson at 130 (second), heavyweight Mike Long (second) Judah Caballero at 103 (third), Brandon Brooks at 112 (third), Eli Caballero at 119 (fourth), Aaron Escobar at 140 (fifth) and Deion Copely at 215 (fifth).

Huron improved to 24-1 on the season and is a perfect 6-0 in Huron League competition.

The Chiefs will host its final league dual of the year against Monroe Jefferson in a quad that will also feature Allen Park and Melvindale.



Four Bucs place first

Riverview competed in the Lincoln Park Orange and Blue Invitational on Saturday and placed fifth out of a 14-team field.

Despite the team finish, the Bucs dominated the podium and crowned four champions on the day.

Sophomore Marina Goocher (103) was named MVP of the tournament’s lightweights after going 4-0 with three pins.

Freshman Brandon Garcia also went 4-0 with four pins to win at 140.

Senior captains Mathew Rossi (160) and Johnston Logan (285) also took first after Rossi finished 5-0 with four pins and Logan finished 4-0 with three pins.

Dakota Martin finished fourth at 145, Teddy Lossing (135) and Kyle Sparks (103) each took fifth, Michael Wright (103) finished seventh and Kyle Terrell (215) finished eighth.



Flat Rock

Flat Rock traveled to The Brandon Blackhawk Tournament on Saturday and finished the day with a 3-2 record.

The Rams defeated Ferndale 54-30, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 55-24 and Clarkston 60-22.

Flat Rock fell to host Brandon 48-21 and Livonia Stevenson 42-40.

The Rams led Stevenson by 16 with three matches remaining, but were pinned in the final three matches in the close loss.

Jason Ingram celebrated his birthday by going 5-0 at 135 pounds. Dakotah Dockter (215) and Brandon Fisher (130) each went 5-0 and Jacob Salter (145) went 4-0.

Brandon Hill returned from injury for the Rams and went 2-0 at 160 and Colin Fater had a solid day and posted a 4-1 record at 171.

The Rams will host Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Lincoln Park and Anderson’s “B” team on Wednesday and will do split squad tournaments on Saturday with 10 wrestlers competing in the Leslie Blackhawk Tournament and the first- and second-year wrestlers competing at Warren Lincoln.
