BOYS' BASKETBALL: Catholic League roundup

Gabriel Richard remains at .500 in Catholic League play after splitting a pair of league games last week with a loss to Everest Academy and a win over Marine City Cardinal Mooney.

On Tuesday, a second-half cold spell resulted in a 41-30 home loss to Everest Academy.

“In the second half, we just weren’t making any shots,” Richard Coach Kris Daiek said. “Defensively, we did a really good job. We got it down to two with two minutes left, but we could never get the lead.”

The Pioneers bounced back on Friday with a hard-fought 38-37 victory over Cardinal Mooney.

The score was tied 23-23 at the half, but Richard went on an early run in the second half and took a seven-point lead in the third.

Jacob Camilerri made a few key free throws with under a minute left to push the Pioneer lead to four points. This would be important as Cardinal Mooney made a three-pointer at the end of regulation.

Danny Baum led Richard with 11 points and Camilerri added nine.

Richard (4-8, 2-2 Catholic League) will have the week off. The Pioneers will take the court next Wednesday at home against West Bloomfield Frankel Jewish Academy.

Cabrini falls

Cabrini dropped it’s only game last week in a 69-62 home loss to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.

Lakes led by seven at the half, but the Monarchs battled back and cut the lead to three entering the fourth quarter before eventually tying the game late.

“We had some opportunities to his some shots,” Cabrini Coach Mark Shea said. “We didn’t hit them and they did.”

“They’re a good group. They’re really athletic. We had some golden opportunities coming down, but we just didn’t take advantage.”

Mike Ball led the Monarchs with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.

Andrew Smith had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards and Scott Smith added 13 points.

“We’re in every game,” Shea said. “We’re playing hard every game. The kids could have folded up the tent, but they didn’t and I couldn’t be more proud of how they work.”

“The kids are definitely playing a lot better than when they started.”

Cabrini (4-4, 1-2 Catholic League) traveled to Royal Oak Shrine on Tuesday and will host Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood on Friday.
