After falling to a state-ranked Flat Rock team on Thursday, the Grosse Ile girls’ basketball team responded with a dominating 55-29 win over St. Mary’s Catholic Central on Friday.
Megan Swick gave Grosse Ile and early lead with four quick baskets to start the game.
The Red Devils maintained a lead throughout the entire game and had a particularly strong third quarter.
Alex Carney led the team with 10 points followed by Mady Jankowski with nine.
Sarah Moehr and Vanessa Wojno each recorded eight points, and Swick finished the night with eight.
Coach Sandy Tobin was pleased with her team’s efforts.
“We play together as a team and have such balanced scoring,” she said. “It is always a challenge to go down to their gym and come out with a win.”
On Monday the Red Devils faced New Boston Huron in a battle for second place in the Huron League. On Thursday, they will host Riverview.
“I’m looking forward to finishing the first round of league play to see where we stand,” Tobin said. “Huron has a good program. We know we have to come to play every night and we need to continue to work hard to become the best team we can be.”
The Chiefs had a pair of wins last week with victories over Carleton Airport and Riverview.
On Jan. 15, they defeated the Jets 49-39 in what Coach Jim Kabfleisch called a real nice back-and-forth game.
Kristin Wolber led the Chiefs with 12 points and Savannah Floyd finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Three nights later, the Chiefs extended their win streak with a 57-47 victory over Riverview.
Huron held the lead throughout the game and led by 15 at one point before the Bucs made a late run to cut it to 10 points.
Lissa Kowalewski led the Chiefs with 15 points and Hailey Richardson had 12.
Anna Vega led Riverview with 15 points, followed by Angela Zammit with 14 points.
The Chiefs took on Grosse Ile Monday night in their battle for second place.
“We’re just gonna play,” Kabfleisch said. “Everything’s find (and) we’re gonna do well.”
Earlier in the week, the Bucs fell 63-33 against Flat Rock. Vega led the team with 11 points.
On Monday they hosted SMCC and will travel to Grosse Ile on Thursday.
