The Carlson hockey team split last week with a win over Cabrini and a loss to Allen Park.
On Jan. 16, the Marauders crushed Cabrini 9-1.
Despite the big victory, Carlson Coach Dennis Gundick said it was a sluggish game for his team and it did not seem like his kids were in the game.
“Nothing was working right for us,” Gundick said. “A lot of missed plays, a lot of missed passes.”
Even with missed plays, the Marauders took a 3-0 lead after the first period.
Patrick Holder got things started right away when he set up brother Ryan Holder for the first goal of the game.
It was Patrick’s first game back since suffering a concussion a few weeks ago.
Nick Milot had a nice rush at the lane and put a shot past the goaltender, unassisted to further Carlson’s lead.
A few minutes later, Pat Denison capped of the opening period scoring when he went down the middle and shot one to make it 3-0.
In between periods, Gundick addressed the slowness of his team’s play and the missed passing.
“We didn’t do anything we’d be working on all year,” Gundick said.
Things got better in the second period and the Marauders added three more goals.
Ryan Holder netted his second of the night, assisted by Anthony Martucci and Drew Coleman.
Coleman then added a goal to his assist when he shot one past Cabrini defense. He was assisted by Richard Brown and Martucci.
The Holder brothers then switched roles and Ryan assisted on a goal from Patrick.
The Monarchs finally got on board in the third period when Brendan Alvis got one past Ellis Graham assisted by Jacob Mackie and Bradley Chavis.
Carlson responded with yet another three goals and the game ended 9-1.
Denison assisted on goals by Pat Holder and Coleman and Aaron Thomas finished the scoring, assisted by Ryan Holder.
Gundick gave credit to Cabrini for continuing to push the whole game.
“None of their skaters gave up the whole game,” he said. I told Bill, ‘your kids never quit.’ They kept on playing as hard as they could play.”
Gundick said the game could easily have been 3-2 after the first period if not for some great saves from Graham.
“Cabrini put some shots on us, but Ellis came up good with the glove and some good pad saves,” he said.
After their win over the Monarchs, the Marauders took on a strong Allen Park team, falling 7-1.
The game was pretty even for the first two periods, according to Gundick and they went into the third period with Allen Park up 3-1.
But the Jags opened up the scoring in the third period and put four unanswered goals past Carlson defense, two within thirty seconds of each other.
Mike Dice, Austin Schultz, Chris Mann, Josh Haney and Steve Littleton (hat trick) all contributed to the Allen Park scoring effort.
Assists came from Aaron Porter, Richie Pincowski, Travis Pippin, Schultz and Mann.
Carlson’s lone goal came from Ryan Holder, unassisted.
The Marauders had scoring chances in the first two periods and threw the puck at the net but could not get a goal. The puck instead bounced off the posts in every which direction but did not go in.
“It seemed like every time it landed, it landed right on top of the goalie,” Gundick said. “We just couldn’t get one by (but) we had opportunities for sure.”
Todd Maynard had the win in net for Allen Park and Brithinee was pleased with the timely saves from his goalie.
He was also satisfied with the disciplined type game his team played with.
“We stayed very disciplined that game,” Brithinee said. “(My team) did not get tied up into any late hits, we kept our mouths shut when it came to if it was a play or call we didn’t like.
“And I think we took advantage of some of the opportunities that Carlson gave us on the power play.”
The game was close through the end of the second period and Brithinee wanted to ensure his team carried over their strong efforts through the last period.
“We wanted to attack them even more,” he said. “We needed, as a team, to start understanding how to put teams away.
“I challenged my team that night to say, guys you have an opportunity going into the third period winning a hockey game. It’s time to basically understand how to put your foot down.”
The Jags responded and four unanswered goals in the fourth period shut the door on the Marauders.
“It was a challenge to see if we could actually do that as a team,” Brithinee said. “Be aggressive and attack them but still stay disciplined.”
The next night, the Jags hosted Grosse Ile in their senior night and won 4-3.
Allen Park always had the lead, up 4-1 at one point but gave up two late third period goals for the final score.
Pippin got the scoring started with an assist by Littleton and Schultz. Nick Fulton gave the Jags a 2-0 lead, helped out by Nick Kelly.
Mann widened the gap with assists from Littleton and Nick Metropoulos and Metropoulos capped off the scoring, unassisted.
Brithinee had hoped that his team would come out with the same type of energy as their game against Carlson and thought they did at first. But the Red Devils took some control and slowed the team down a bit.
“They just kept on coming at us,” Brithinee said. “I don’t know if our team was quite ready for that. We weren’t able to take the next step to put our foot down a little more firmly (but) we pulled out a victory and that’s the important part.”
The Jags are off this week and will play in the Metro League Showcase at Dearborn on Saturday where they will face Anderson.
The Marauders will travel to Monroe on Thursday for their only game of the week.
On Friday, Cabrini fell to Royal Oak Shrine 11-4.
The Monarchs stayed within two goals at the end of the first two periods and trailed 4-2 after the first and 6-4 after the second before surrendering five unanswered goals in the third.
“They were just too much for us,” Cabrini Coach Bill Alvis said. “We’re in the growing stages here, but we put up a good performance in the first two periods. We just ran out of gas in the third.”
Tyler Adams scored a pair of goals while Bradley Chavis and Anthony Killam each scored once.
Chris Sukel and Brendan Alvis each had two assists and Joe Hay and Sheldon Varhol each assisted once.
The Monarchs will host Ann Arbor Skyline on Wednesday, will travel to Gabriel Richard on Thursday and will return home on Saturday to take on Carleton Airport.
