The Gabriel Richard girls’ basketball team finished last week with a pair of wins over rival Cabrini and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.
Against the Monarchs, the Pioneers won 50-35 after an 11-5 first quarter lead.
“Rival games oftentimes are a toss-up,” Richard Coach William Jones said. “Coming into tonight’s contest, I felt pretty good about the improvements we’ve made, and that we were looking forward to a great test and challenge from a division opponent and a city rival.”
Both teams competed hard and the game was played at Cabrini’s tempo before the Pioneers settled into their game style.
Richard outscored Cabrini 30-22 in the second half as the Pioneers controlled the play.
Jones tipped his cap to the vanquished Monarchs.
“I very much must credit the Cabrini players and their staff for playing as hard as possible for the entire 32 minutes,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons they are always a tough game.”
Cabrini Coach Mike Rozanski said his team struggled to shoot the ball effectively and missed both interior and perimeter shots.
“Every time we made a run in the second half, GR answered with runs of their own,” he said.
Pioneer’s Ashley Henderson was especially tough for the Monarchs in the second half, scoring 14 of her 19 points.
Henderson was Richard’s leading scorer. Brielle Bilinski also added seven points.
Emily Zgoda led Cabrini with nine points. Hanna Formella added five points and Olivia Mocnik finished with four.
On Friday, the Pioneers extended their winning streak with a 51-45 victory over Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.
Last season the Ann Arbor-Riverview Richard game was where the Pioneers have one of their more spectacular “meltdown” according to Jones, but he told his team to not be afraid heading into this year’s matchup.
“Opportunity for great things is there for us,” Jones told his team. “Because our opponent will believe we’re going to play, behave, (and) respond just like last year.”
The Pioneers did not want a repeat of last season and went into the contest with an open ledger and a clear outlook.
The Fighting Irish played with the same defenses and tactics as last season but the Pioneers did not.
The game was a tight-knit showdown with each team staying within a basket or two of each other throughout.
Ann Arbor pushed to game to a faster tempo than Jones would have liked, but his team responded well and forced 41 turnovers on the Fighting Irish.
The 41 turnovers were a season high as well as a program high.
Henderson led the team once again with 22 points.
She had a great floor game with strong scoring, passing and defensive work, according to Jones.
Morgan Casanova recorded 12 points, including four straight free throws to seal the game in the last minute, and Emily Cooper finished with nine points. Seven of her points counted for the 18 total the Pioneers had in the fourth quarter.
“The victory was another one shared by all the team members,” Jones said. “As a group, they really appear to be enjoying each other more each day, and coming together.”
The two wins last week put the Pioneers 3-1 in CHSL AA Division play and 5-5 overall on the season.
The team began the second stretch of league games on Tuesday when they traveled to Lutheran North and will return home tomorrow to take on a 4-0 AA Division Notre Dame Prep team.
The Notre Dame game is also Richard’s annual middle school and CYO recognition night for student-athletes, teams and coaches.
After falling to Richard, the Monarchs lost a heartbreaker when they hosted Livonia Ladywood in a 36-33 cross over league game.
Cabrini started the game slow, quickly going down 10-0 after missing layups and several wide open shots, and giving up several open shots in transition.
At the end of the opening quarter, Livonia led 15-5 and 24-14 at the half.
But the Monarchs were not going to give up so easily and battled their way back.
“We adjusted our interior defense at half and did an exceptional job on perimeter closeouts and taking four chargers from our help defense in the second half,” Rozanski said.
The changes worked and the Monarchs were only down 29-24 after the third quarter.
Rozanski’s team continued to frustrate Ladywood and took a 32-31 lead with four minutes to go, but was unable to keep up the momentum.
“(We) had a breakdown on an offensive rebound attempt, allowing Ladywood to leak out in transition scoring an easy bucket,” Rozanski said. “We had several great looks at scores down the stretch, but didn’t make shots.”
Cabrini is now 3-7 overall and 0-4 in league play. The Monarchs hosted Fr. Gabriel Richard last night and will host Lutheran North tomorrow.
