In a battle of Downriver League powers, Trenton dealt Roosevelt its first dual meet loss in nearly two years on Thursday with a 103-83 victory over the Bears.
Roosevelt won over half of the meet’s events, but Trenton’s depth was the deciding factor.
“We managed to win seven of the 12 events, but the Trenton team was deeper,” Roosevelt Coach Sue Alt said.
Trenton won three individual events with first-place finishes from David O’Donnell in the 200 IM, Thomas Wolsek in the 50-free and Adam Friedman in the backstroke.
The Trojans also took first in a pair of relays with season-best times in the medley relay (Friedman, Wolsek, Adam Mulka, Cody Pratt) and the 200 freestyle relay (Pratt, Johnny Diehl, Wolsek, O’Donnell).
“We knew we had to win two of the relays to have a chance to win the meet,” Trenton Coach Jim Lawrence said. “We swam terrific.”
“Last year, we got beat up and they handled us pretty well at our place. This year, we knew that we had to do certain things to win the meet.”
Trenton’s depth stepped up throughout the meet with a number of personal-best swims, including Ben Sieloff in the 200-free and 500-free, Tyler Stawowczyk in the 200 IM and butterfly, Dane Roberts in the butterfly and breaststroke, Wolsek and Pratt in the 50-free, Mulka and Alex Ginn in the breaststroke and Colin Westrate in the backstroke.
“It was a very good meet for us and we were emotionally ready,” Lawrence said. “We just have a ton of depth, but it doesn’t come by accident.”
Collin Olson was Roosevelt’s lone double-winner with MISCA-qualifying times in the 100-free and 200-free.
Other individual wins came from Jesse Knowles in the 500-free, Tom Martin in the butterfly, Garrid Blair in diving and Danny May in the breaststroke (MISCA-qualifying time).
Knowles, Martin, Olson and Sean Pearce teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay with another Roosevelt MISCA-qualifying finish.
“The team put forth their best effort and achieved 32 season-best times during the meet,” Alt said.
The Roosevelt coach also acknowledged Joel Whitehead, John Broge, David Trusewicz and Carter Waggoner for big improvements.
Bucs tame Jags
Riverview recorded over 50 season-best times on Tuesday in the Bucs’ 105-76 victory over Allen Park.
“We had a lot of best times, even from our younger kids,” Riverview Coach Sean Kelly said. “We’ve just passed the peak of training and we are focusing more on race skills and techniques and it’s starting to pay off.”
The Bucs won seven of 12 events and were led individually by a pair of double-winners as Jacob Hosier won the 200 IM and breaststroke while Ryan Pickell took first in the 50-free and 100-free.
Pickell and Hosier were each a part of a winning relay as Pickell teamed with Alex Guthrie, Nick Diroff and Morgen Gardocki to win the 200 freestyle relay and Hosier joined Alex Guthrie, Nicolas Guthrie and Diroff to take the medley.
Noah Ellington and Nathan Smiley went 1-2 in diving for the Bucs and Riverview qualified its 400 freestyle relay team for MISCA.
All three Riverview relay teams have now qualified for that competitive meet.
Allen Park’s Sean Flannigan took first in the 200-free and 500-free, Will Marosi won the butterfly and backstroke and the team of Adam Velarde, Daniel Cayo, Flannigan and Marosi took first in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Bucs will take on Erie Mason on Tuesday.
Carlson tops LP
The Carlson/Anderson Co-op swimming team did some mixing and matching with its lineup and came away with a 99-70 victory over Lincoln Park on Thursday.
“I had my swimmers in different events last night to give them a chance to try events out of the norm,” Carlson/Anderson Coach Amy Kleinsmith said.
Carlson/Anderson winners included Matt Trombley in the 200-free, Matt Anderson in the 100-free and Alex Penland in the 200 IM.
“We’re anticipating some best times as well as some medals at The News-Herald meet on Saturday and have been preparing all week in practice for that meet,” Kleinsmith said.
Cabrini goes 2-1
Cabrini traveled to Belleville on Tuesday for a quad meet and put together a solid showing, going 2-1 on the night.
The Monarchs defeated Taylor Co-op 133-50, upset Woodhaven 94-91 and fell to host Belleville 108-78.
Cabrini’s strong effort was powered by 65 personal-best swims.
“I was extremely proud of how everyone battled to the very end,” Cabrini Coach Paul LaCroix said. “(It) took everyone swimming and diving their best to come up with the two victories.”
The victory over Woodhaven came with some late dramatics as the Monarchs needed to take first and third in the meet’s final event.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Connor McAfee, Jonah Globke, Katie Krawczyk and Kirk Nicola set a new school-record and the Monarchs turned in seven personal-best swims between its two relay teams.
The Monarchs continued to smash previous school records and set new marks in the medley relay (Nicola, Ford Pariseau, Globke, McAfee), the 100-free (McAfee), the 50-free (McAfee, the backstroke (Nicola) and the breaststroke (Pariseau).
Cabrini diver Erik LaCroix remained unbeaten in dual meets and turned in the lone overall first-place finish for the Monarchs in that event.
