After a number of comeback victories already under their belt this season, the Allen Park Jaguars found themselves in unfamiliar territory: holding and sustaining a lead.

A pair of scoring runs powered the Jags to their third Downriver League victory of the season in a 52-45 home win over Kennedy on Tuesday night.

The game wasn’t decided in the first four minutes, but it greatly affected the outcome as Allen Park scored the game’s first 14 points and held Kennedy scoreless until the four-minute mark in the first quarter.

“Coming out like that was huge for us,” Allen Park Coach Jim Victor said. “Earlier in the year, we dug ourselves a lot of big holes. We knew we could compete and we knew that we had to get a jump on these guys because you’ve got to protect your home court.”

The Eagles did not go quietly and scored the next eight points and ended the quarter trailing 16-8.

Kennedy stayed within eight points for much of the second quarter, but Allen Park’s Tyler Warga scored the quarter’s final five points, including a buzzer-beating half-court heave to put the Jags ahead 29-16 at the half.

Allen Park completed a 10-0 run by scoring the first five points of the third quarter for a 34-16 lead early in the second half. Kennedy chipped away and climbed to within 12 points entering the fourth, 38-26.

The Eagles continued to hang around in the fourth and climbed to within six points, 48-42, with less than two minutes remaining. After pushing the lead back to nine points, the Jags had a difficult time holding on to the ball and running out the clock.

“Now we have to learn how to preserve a win,” Victor said. “The bottom line is that we haven’t been in that position at times.”

Kennedy got back to within six points with under ten second remaining, but could not get any closer in a game that Allen Park led wire-to-wire.

“We have a lot of young guys on the floor and they need to learn to make the correct decisions, but make no mistake, that was a huge win for us.”

The Jags moved to 3-1 in Downriver League play and sit near the top of the league standings during a season that has already seen a number of teams beat up on one another.

“It’s a great start, but it’s Southgate,” said Victor, whose Jags will travel to Anderson on Thursday. “The way I look at it, we’re 0-0 and we’ve gotta go beat Southgate on Thursday.”

Warga recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Trevor Simms also scored 16 in the win and Richie Slate added seven.

Matt Woloszyk and Andia Marsh each had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles and David Cheeks added eight points and four rebounds.

Kennedy (4-4, 1-3 DRL) hosts Carlson that same night.
