The Trenton hockey team kept up its maddening habit of losing leads and games when it surrendered a 2-0 advantage and eventually fell to Grosse Pointe North 3-2 Saturday night.
It was the second time this season the Norsemen came back to beat the Trojans and it was the fourth time this year that Trenton has lost a third-period lead.
“It was kind of amazing,” said Trenton Coach Mike Turner. “It was 0-0 after the first period and we turned it up in the second and played really, really well.
“There was no indication that it was going to go any other way in the third period.”
Oh, but it did.
Grosse Pointe scored very early in the third period and went on to outshoot the Trojans 15-2. The Norsemen got the game-winner with about three minutes left to play in the game.
Justin Dunn scored an unassisted second-period goal to give Trenton its first lead of the game and Vinny DaBrowa had a power-play goal later in the second to make it 2-0.
Dunn and Phil Pugliese assisted on DaBrowa’s goal.
A week ago, the Trojans knocked off Allen Park 6-2 in a game that saw Trenton out-shoot the Jaguars 54-24.
Brandon Hoffman scored two goals and Aaron Arturi one as Trenton took a3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game.
It was 3-1 at the end of the first period before Brad Teska, Dunn and Adnrew Sawyer scored to give Trenton a 6-2 lead att he end of two period.
Although Trenton out-shot Allen Park 15-6, there was no scoring in the third period.
Steve Littleton scored both of Allen Park’s goals. Nick Metropoulos and Richie Pinkowski assisted on Littleton’s first goal.
Trenton goalie Ben Ramirez stopped 22 of 24 Allen Park shots and Allen Park’s Jake Stoddard got 48 of the 54 drives Trenton sent his way.
The loss was Allen Park’s first of three for the week. The Jags also lost to Grosse Pointe South and Dearborn Divine Child and additionally, lost both Aaron Porter and captain Tom Snyder to injuries.
Porter is out a couple of week on crutches and Snyder broke his hand and will be reevaluated in two weeks.
Despite the loss to the Trojans, Allen Park Coach Brithinee was pleased with the efforts from Austin Schultz and says he has been playing excellent in his senior season and leads his team by example.
Schultz was rewarded for his efforts Saturday night when he scored the Jaguars’ only two goals of the night against Grosse Pointe South. The Jaguars would lose the game 4-2.
“He outworks everybody and he was rewarded for his efforts Saturday,” Brithinee said.
The Jaguars found themselves down two goals before Schultz tied it up in the second period, but were unable to keep the momentum going into the third.
“It was a hard, long week for us,” Brithinee said.
“We did run out of gas a little bit. We shot ourselves in the foot (and) took a couple undisciplined penalties that period.
“We’re trying to win this game and we can’t stay out of the penalty box.”
The Jaguars saw two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and a 10-minute game misconduct cutting their already short roster.
“It was a total lack of focus we had,” Brithinee said. “(It was) a little bit disappointing. Hopefully a lesson’s well learned because it actually cost us the game.”
On Friday night the Jags fell 4-1 against Divine Child and injuries plagued the team once again.
In the second period the team lost Steve Littleton to a leg injury, but he was able to return the following night.
“I had to almost play two and a half lines for two periods,” Brithinee said. “We absolutely ran out of gas. We just didn’t have a deep enough bench.”
The Jaguars will look to turn things around this week when the start back up against Carlson on Friday and Grosse Ile on Saturday.
“It’s gonna be a tough stretch,” Brithinee said. “Doesn’t get any easier does it?
“We’re just going to try to get and stay healthy. Beyond that, we’re just gonna keep on rolling. We’re playing lots of guys and we’ll probably keep it that way towards the end of the month.”
