BOYS' BASKETBALL: Inter-City remains perfect at 7-0

Inter-City Baptist remains perfect on the season after winning two more games last week, including a statement victory over the top ranked team in Class D.

On Friday, the Chargers defeated Southfield Christian, the number one ranked team in the state, 50-49.

Inter-City took an early advantage and built a 20-point halftime lead, 32-12.

“I think we played well,” Inter-City Coach Mark Kraatz said. “Our defense was solid and we didn’t give them any second chances.”

Southfield Christian proved why it was the top ranked team by fighting back in the second half by switching up its defense.

“I take full responsibility,” Kraatz said. “We had played so well in the first half and they came out in a different defense in the second half and I didn’t make the right adjustment and put our kids in a bad spot.”

Evan Kraatz recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds.

Luke Barber scored 16 points and Troy Kazlaskas had seven points.

On Tuesday, the Chargers defeated Oakland Christian on the road 64-39.

The Chargers had another strong opening half and carried a 37-13 advantage.

“We jumped on them right off the bat,” Kraatz said. “It was over early and it was just a strong performance.”

Barber led the way with 25 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Nathanael Packwood had 10 points and 12 rebounds, Garrett Kraatz had eight and Evan Kraatz had six points and 12 assists.

The Chargers (7-0) traveled to University Liggett on Tuesday and will host Plymouth Christian on Friday.

Baptist Park splits

Baptist Park went 1-1 last week with a loss to Ann Arbor Greenhills and a win over Novi Franklin Road.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats fell to Greenhills 78-61.

“They jumped on us in the second and fourth quarters,” Baptist Park Coach Bill Miller said. “They were just a better team than we were and they’re probably going to win our league.”

Javon Shell led Baptist Park with 17 points.

Daniel Eubanks had 12, Anthony Kaminski had 10 points and eight rebounds, Devonte Scofield had four points and 14 boards and Kirk Thomas pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Wildcats rebounded on Friday with a 52-46 win over Franklin Road.

“Both teams were pretty equal,” Miller said. “In the third quarter, they pressed up and we just kept beating it to get that edge.”

“They tried to speed the game up. We broke it every time and got a pretty good jump and went with it.”

Kaminski had 18 points in the victory while Thomas chipped in 13 points and Scofield added four points and 12 rebounds.

Baptist Park traveled to Westland Lutheran on Tuesday and will host Ypsilanti Cavalry on Friday.

Summit goes 1-1

Summit Academy split a pair of games last week with a 61-51 victory over Bradford Academy and a 78-43 loss to Chandler Park Academy on Friday.

On Tuesday, the Dragons ran out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter en route to the 10-point victory.

Bradford fought back and took a six-point lead entering the fourth, but the Dragons took over in the fourth quarter with 30 points to pull away.

Cory Hicks led the Dragons with 29 points while London Carrington and Gregory Glenn each scored eight.

On Friday, Chandler Park Academy, ranked number two in Class D, proved to be too much for Summit in a 78-43 win over the Dragons.

“They have a very good team,” Summit Academy Coach Don Farago said. “They came out in the second half and we didn’t match their intensity and the game got away from us.”

Hicks had nine points in the loss and Glenn added eight.

The Dragons (4-6) traveled to Star International Academy on Tuesday and will host Old Redford Academy on Friday.

Richard drops two

Battling sickness, the Gabriel Richard Pioneers were shorthanded last week and fell in a pair of games to Frankel Jewish Academy and Cabrini.

On Tuesday, the Pioneers fell to Jewish Academy 67-58.

Richard led at the half, but Jewish Academy gradually pulled away late in the game for the nine-point victory.

Danny Baum led the Pioneers with 19 points.

On Friday, the Pioneers fell to rival Cabrini 68-54.

The Pioneers were within six for much of the second half, but could not get over the hump against the Monarchs.
