The Gabriel Richard girls’ basketball team split games last week, falling to Marian and defeating Lutheran North.
On Friday, the Pioneers defeated Lutheran North 40-36 in a CHSL AA Division game.
Richard was outscored in the first and third quarters but strong efforts in the second and fourth ensured their win.
North has been picked as one of the favorites to win the division this year and Coach William Jones said that was part of the motivation for his girls going into the game.
“Last year we beat North by 30 and 29 points respectively,” Jones said. “I’ve seen them play a couple times earlier in the season this year and was impressed with the movements they made as a team.
“I knew there would be no big-point victories this time around.”
The Pioneers decided to play some zone, which proved enough to get them through the first half, but when North’s best shooter Katie Draeger got some open shots in the second half, Richard moved back to their traditional man-to-man defense to help them secure their victory.
“What I’m most pleased about is the total investment and involvement of every player on the roster,” Jones said. “On the floor with her individual efforts, in the group context sharing collective goals and objectives and even the girls who didn’t’ play a lot of even get into the game with their cheers and support from the bench.”
Jones said he could not have been more proud at any point in the season than he was Friday night.
Emily Cooper led the team with 13 points.
Earlier in the week, the Pioneers fell 75-27 to Marian in a CHSL cross over game.
Despite the loss, it was exactly the kind of game Jones wanted after their Division opener versus Notre Dame Prep on Jan. 4.
“Obviously not the outcome or the final tally of points and such, but to have a physical and fast-paced game, against a quality opponent, meant a whole lot more to the places we are aiming ourselves as a team this year, than an ‘easy game’ to get a guaranteed ‘W’ would have.”
It was definitely not an easy game for Richard who was outscored 48-10 in the second half, after starting it down just 10 points.
“In the second half, we discovered where we still need work and continued attention to details both major and minor,” Jones said.
Ashley Henderson led the Pioneers with 10 points.
Richard took on CHSL AA Division opponent and downriver rival Cabrini last night.
