The Anderson wrestling team continued its strong season winning a quad meet last week, and going 4-1 in the South Lyon tournament.
In their quad meet, Anderson defeated both Canton (41-21) and Summit (78-3).
Double winners for the day included; Bobby Fisher (103), Jarad Fernandez (112), Alex Molloy (130), Tyler Carson (135), Logan Parks (140), Cody Stanley (152), Mariano Burgos (160) and Austin Sloan at heavyweight.
Over the weekend, the team traveled to South Lyon and lost only to Fowlerville, which is ranked fifth in the state, 48-28 in the finals.
The Titans defeated Novi (50-17), Lansing Everett (68-9), Chelsea (39-26) and Plymouth (45-24).
Fernandez and Molloy each went 5-0 on the day.
Raven Schmitt (119), Parks, Stanley, Burgos and Sloan all finished 4-1.
Anderson is now 18-4 on the year and every team they have lost to is ranked in the state.
“We’re wrestling tough,” Coach Jerry Frazier said. “We continue to get better every time we step on the mat.”
The Titans are now focusing on winning the remainder of their league meets as the Downriver League meet draws closer.
“We just gotta go in and take care of business,” Frazier said.
Trojans roll
At the Waterford quad, Trenton defeated Waterford Mott (49-19) and Waterford Kettering (45-27).
Brandon Russo (103), Antonio Duperron (112), Maverick Johnson (119), Vince Bartaway (152), Gabe Wykle (160), Shane Danyko (171) and heavy weight Tom Stackpole all went 2-0 on the day. Duperron is a freshman who is new to the Trenton lineup.
Over the weekend, the Trojans won the Port Huron Tournament, finishing first out of 18 teams with 228.5 points.
St. Clair Shores finished second with 181 points and Ann Arbor Pioneer had 141 points.
Coach Tom Bluhm saw 13 of his 14 wrestlers place at the tournament.
The Trojans saw three first place finishes during the day.
Johnson finished first in his weight category pinning all four of his opponents and only spent around three minutes on the mat.
Wykle finished first after winning a tough match against a tough opponent in overtime, and Stackpole recorded his 100th win over the weekend.
Russo and Bartaway took second and Dean Noffsinger (135), Cosgrove, Danyko, Purcell and Josh Berry (215) all finished third.
Ian Collier (112) took fourth and Nolan Rickman (125) and Caleb Coleman (130) finished sixth.
“I think the kids are getting better and better,” Bluhm said. “The younger kids are getting better and the good kids are still doing real well.
“It’s been steady improvement week by week, getting ready for the end of the year.”
The Trojans are now 14-4 overall and take on Roosevelt and Melvindale at the Woodhaven quad tonight before traveling to Dexter this weekend for a team tournament where they have finished second the last few years and will face powerhouse Brighton.
Cards are second
Melvindale went to the Wayne Memorial team tournament over the weekend where they went 4-1 and took second place after losing to the host team by one match.
The Cardinals fell to Wayne Memorial (39-32) but defeated Walled Lake West (58-21), Summit Academy (76-3), Clarenceville (69-10) and Annapolis (44-33).
Ameer Munassar (119), Skylar Slotka (125) and Andrew Barron (135) all went 5-0 on the day.
Matt Curmi (103), Ramzy Yousef (112), Josh Hoak (130) and Luis Perez (152) all finished 4-1.
The Cardinals wrestle in the Woodhaven quad tonight before staying local this weekend where they will compete in the Lincoln Park Orange and Blue Classic.
Bears place
Roosevelt traveled to the Warren Woods Tower Clash of Champions last weekend where they placed six of 10 wrestlers.
As a team, the Bears finished sixth of the 19 teams attending.
Quentin Santiago (135) and Vince Pizzo (215) were both champions in their weight class. Pizzo was also the tournament most outstanding wrestler.
Fernando Marquez (152) finished second and Austin Rice (112), Collin Vargo (130) and Andrew Storms (215) all finished fifth.
Tonight, the Bears will wrestle Woodhaven and Trenton in the Woodhaven quad, before staying close to home in the Orange and Blue Classic this weekend.
Jags win two
A week ago, both the Lincoln Park and Allen Park wrestling teams defeated New Boston B team and Caesar Chavez Academy.
The Jags defeated New Boston 46-21 and Caesar Chavez 66-0.
Winners for Allen Park were Dylan Miner (112), Shane Atkinson (119), Sean Speers (125), Ben Lewis (130), Dan Schmidt (135), Jake Chapman (140), Roy Llamas (145), Tony Dunlap (152) and heavyweight Tim Durocher.
Individual winners for the Rails were Tyler Castillo (112), Dylan McLeod (119), James Rodgers (125), Dominic Greene (130), Quinn Chapman (135), Brandon Duvall (140), Nate Bailey (145), Roberto Davis (152), Christian Villarreal (171), Luis Angeles (189) Sonny Botello (215) and Blake Johnson (285).
Over the weekend, Lincoln Park went to the Warren Woods Tournament, where they finished eighth as a team.
Davis was a champion in his weight class. Botello and Duvall took fourth and McLeod and Villarreal took fifth.
Allen Park was at the Warren Lincoln tournament where they finished eighth after going 2-3 as a team.
The Jags fell to Auburn Hills Avondale (56-24), Memphis (42-34) and Sterling Heights (66-14) and defeated Bloomfield Hills Lasher (53-24) and Dearborn Divine Child (36-24).
Speers and Robbie Brown went 5-0 on the day, Ben Lewis (130) finished 4-1 and Jake Chapman (140) went 3-2.
“Injuries definitely hurt us as we gave up five voids most of the day,” Coach Dave Bearden said.
The Jags wrestle in the last Downriver League quad of the year tonight.
Hillman leads WHS
The Woodhaven Warriors went to the Durand Individual Tournament over the weekend there they finished third out of 16 teams and played all six wrestlers.
Derek Hillman led the Warriors with his first place finish.
Matt Horne and Austin Avison finished second and Chris Guttman, Mickey Sutton and Jared Ammons finished third.
The Warriors host Melvindale and Roosevelt tonight.
Carlson wins quad, third at tournament
A week ago the Carlson wrestling team was at the Woodhaven quad where the defeated Woodhaven B (54-15) and Thurston (67-6).
Nathan Skuratovich, Mason Brott, Billy Gibson, Avery Alfredo, Alex Franco, Paul Sawicki, Max Underwood, Jake Mydloski, Zach Underwood and Nick Carlson all went 2-0 on the day.
Over the weekend, the Marauders hosted a team tournament where they went 4-1, taking third place.
Carlson defeated Fenton (75-6), Huron B (48-32), Fordson (53-22) and Edsel Ford (56-20) before falling to state ranked Tecumseh (54-18).
Leading the team with 4-1 records were Brott, Sawicki, Carlson, Zach Underwood and Austin Francis.
“We had a good week of wrestling,” Coach Lance Hassell said. “Some of our younger wrestlers really stepped it up for us and continuously have been showing improvement.”
The Marauders host Anderson and Allen Park tonight before traveling to Williamston over the weekend for the Jim Mooney Classic.
