The Flat Rock girls’ basketball team continued its dominating season and pushed their record to 9-0 with wins last week over New Boston Huron and Milan.
On Friday, the Rams crushed Milan 69-20.
Marc Villemure said his team played a very clean game and they saw many contributions from the bench.
Rae’Anne Highers and Holli Rhodes each had nine points off the bench for Flat Rock.
Morgan Kaiser led the way for the team with 14 points and six steals.
Haley Boyer recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Paige Villemure finished with 11 points.
Earlier in the week, the Rams defeated a strong Huron 55-38.
The Rams had a strong start but then struggled in the second quarter. Huron took advantage and took a three point lead after the first half, but Flat Rock regained control.
“Our post players did an outstanding job of attacking the basket in the second half,” Villemure said. “Our pressure was much more successful in the second half for us.”
The Rams were led by Paige Villemure with 14 points and Kaiser with 12 points.
Breanna Keethler finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Chiefs struggled against Flat Rock, and turned the ball over 30 times and had trouble against Paige Villemure.
“Basically, we just didn’t play well,” Coach Jim Kabfleisch said.
Hailey Richardson led Huron with 16 points in the game.
The game was the Chiefs’ first Huron League loss of the season, and their second overall loss.
A few nights later, the Chiefs suffered their second loss of the week in a close 27-26 game against St. Mary’s Catholic Central.
Huron missed three shots at the end of the game for the win and only went to the free throw line five times, while the Falcons went 12-for-23 on the night.
“We didn’t go to the free throw line, they did,” Kabfleisch said. “That was the difference in the game.”
Richardson led the team again with 18 points.
The Chiefs had made some changes in their game plan, and now plan to switch things back, while they continue to look for others to step up to the scoring.
“We’re going back to what we did before,” Kabfleisch said. “We’ll be okay. We’ll press them, we’re gonna throw it inside, (and) get someone else to step up and score.
“We’ve been looking for someone to step up and score.”
Riverview wins two
The Bucs finished the week with two Huron League wins over Milan and Monroe Jefferson.
On Friday, Riverview defeated Monroe 57-25.
The Bucs jumped out to a 13-7 lead and outscored the Bears in each of the next three quarters to secure their lead.
Kelsey Brewer led the team with 12 points and four steals. Angela Zammit recorded 10 points and five rebounds and Anna Vega had eight points, six assists and seven steals.
Earlier in the week, they crushed Milan 68-30.
A 25-7 led after the first quarter gave Coach Marty Mucha’s team the boost they needed to ensure their win.
Vega dominated the offense, recording 27 points. She also had 10 steals and five rebounds.
Zammit added eight points and nine rebounds.
Devils beat Airport
In their first game back since winning the Bill Lowery Tournament, the Grosse Ile basketball team defeated Airport 50-30.
Alex Carney led the Red Devils with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Megan Swick added 12 points.
“The team is playing well,” Coach Sandy Tobin said. “We have balanced scoring and I am seeing great leadership out of the seniors.
“We just need to continue to improve each day.”
This week the Red Devils take on Flat Rock.
