Anderson students get lesson in respect at Sportsmanship Assembly (PHOTO)

Anderson High School recently held an all school Sportsmanship Assembly in the school’s gymnasium. The assembly was held to help educate the students about true sportsmanship and to convey the school district’s expecations regarding student behavior while attending events. Included was a demonstration regarding respectful behavior during the national anthem. Anderson Athletic Director Dave Pinkowski said, “Like many other schools in the Downriver League, we have tremendous participation from our student body. Our fan section is growing rapidly and has become a big part of many games. We used this assembly to help “coach up” our students about how they are expected to show respect during the national anthem and how to support our programs without being degrading to other teams or showing poor sportsmanship.”

Too often, teams and students draw attention to themselves during the national anthem. Pinkowski said that Southgate fans and athletes are expected to face the flag, put their right hand over their heart, and pay proper respect to the flag throughout the national anthem. They are not to hug, sway, interlock little fingers or try to show team or fan unity during the anthem.

Pinkowski said, “All of our events are entirely focused on the students and the athletes. We believe in Southgate that it’s not asking too much to have everyone focus on the flag during the national anthem and pay respect to those men and women who fought for our right to have a free society.”

Pinkowski said that since the assembly, the coaches, players, and athletes have done a tremendous job at being respectful, cheering vigorously, and representing Southgate in a positive light.

Pinkowski said the games have gotten far more interesting with the addition of various themes displayed by the fan section. However, the costumes, props, and cheers must all be appropriate for all fans and not take away from the event. Using a few minutes at an all school assembly to educate and encourage the students should help maintain a fun, yet sportsmanlike atmosphere at this year’s winter events.

Pinkowski said that two Anderson students, Kraig McAllister and Robert Bellon, volunteered to help better organize and lead the fan section.

During the recent assembly, McAllister and Bellon taught their peers the “dos and don’ts” about fan sections and the cheers.

They gave a few tips on how to “self-police” the fan section. They even taught the fans a new cheer they plan on using this winter season and have started a Twitter account dedicated to the fan section to share information about themes and which games the fan section will be able to attend.
