All Swimming - Boys Stories
Allen Park opened 2013 with a big 110-70 league victory over Woodhaven on Thursday.
The Jags turned in five MISCA-qualifying swims in the meet, including Sean Flanigan in the 200-free and 500-free, Will Marosi in the backstroke and the medley relay team of Michael Burnham, Tony Vinco, Marosi and Brandon Liphardt.
“Allen Park and Woodhaven is always an exciting dual,” Allen Park Coach Tyler Card said. “It’s always a close meet.”
“Our guys swam really well coming out of the tough holiday break training.”
Gracious in defeat, Woodhaven Coach Tarran Johnson-Lemieux was complimentary of the improvements he sees in the Jags.
“Allen Park looks a lot stronger than they did before the break,” Johnson-Lemieux said. “Many of their guys have developed both physically and mentally since last season and it’s obvious Coach Card is doing a great job in his first season at Allen Park.”
Woodhaven’s roster has been decimated by injury and illness this winter and the Warriors are feeling the effects.
“I’ve had the most injuries (and) illnesses I have ever had in one season over the last three weeks (with) several of them major,” Johnson-Lemieux said. “I went from having 32 to 21 able-bodied swimmers in that time period.”
Woodhaven’s Wesley Moilanen won the 100-free and 200 IM, Zachary Rodriguez took first in diving and Alex Rodriguez finished first in the 50-free to go along with a second-place finish in the butterfly.
David Erickson took second in the 200-free and 500-free and Damien Straub finished second in the 100-free and third in the backstroke.
“Despite the loss, I am proud of the way our guys reacted,” Johnson-Lemieux said. “They swam with great hears and never gave up.”
