GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Roundup

After a win and a loss at the Seina Heights University Christmas Tournament over the holiday break, the Cabrini Monarchs suffered a tough 47-34 loss at the hands of Lutheran North last Friday.

Cabrini got off to a slow start and the Monarchs fell behind 24-5 after the first quarter.

“We obviously started the game poorly, failing to execute our defensive game plan to defend Lutheran North’s two six-foot post players,” Cabrini Coach Mike Rozanski said.

The early deficit, coupled with numerous breakdowns in Monarch defense gave the Mustangs control during much of the game.

Cabrini picked up the pace in the middle quarters and ended the third period down 39-22.

“We played much better in the second and third quarters, but we could not cut the lead to under 10 points the entire game,” Rozanski said.

“Lutheran North may have the most talented roster in the league, and you cannot go on the road and spot them such a big lead.”

The Monarchs were led by Emily Zgoda with 13 points. Hanna Formella followed, contributing 10 points.

This week the team sees two league games.

Last night they hosted Notre Dame Prep and Friday they will travel to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.

Melvindale

In a down-to-the-last-minute game, the Melvindale Cardinals fell 43-31 in the Dearborn Edsel Ford showcase last week.

“It was pretty close all the way down until the middle of the fourth quarter,” Coach Tom Schick said. “Nobody really had a good size lead until the end of the game.”

Melvindale had not played during the holiday break, which Schick said made them rusty and affected them conditioning-wise.

“The break kind of affected them,” he said. “(But) we were able to hang with them. It was a pretty decent game.”

The teams were tied 19-19 at the half, before the Thunderbirds broke away to secure their victory.

Auriel Harris continued her dominating season and accounted for almost half of Melvindale’s offense, contributing 17 points. No other player had more than four points.

“Auriel’s definitely our leader,” Schick said. “She’s our leading scorer (and) she’s always guarding the other team’s best defensive player which really helps the rest of the girls take a little bit of the pressure off.

“She’s done everything on the floor that any coach could expect from a player like that. She keeps the team together.”

Last night the Cardinals hosted the Kennedy and Friday night will travel to Wyandotte to take on the undefeated Roosevelt Bears.

Gabriel Richard Basketball

After starting the season with tournaments and non-league play, the Gabriel Richard girls’ basketball team got CHSL play underway on Friday night against Notre Dame Prep, falling 35-33.

Coach William Jones said he knows his team did not play its best game, but he is not ready to push the panic button.

“We know we didn’t play our best,” he said. “Every so often a team runs into a game where things just aren’t going right.”

Jones gave credit to Notre Dame and said his team missed simple layups they make every day in practice and did not value the ball at key moments and were beat on the boards late in the game.

“We as a team are still feeling our way through being ‘queens of the mountain,’” Jones said.

Last season the Pioneers won their division and this season have become the team everyone else is trying to knock out.

“We’re getting everyone’s best game. It’s a position Richard has not been in before,” Jones said.

Senior Ashley Henderson led the team with eight points during the game.

Despite the loss, Jones and his Pioneers are not blaming any one thing in particular.

“Anytime you lose, it’s a disappointment and finger pointing can start” he said. “We don’t get sucked into that. This thing isn’t going to get on the ‘right path’ from any one person, nor is any one person to blame when it doesn’t go right.”

Richard got right back on the horse last night in a CHSL crossover game against Marian.

“I like the fact that we’re getting right back to it after a subpar performance,” Jones said. “It’s certainly a worthy opponent (and) it will reveal a lot about our team and where we are.

The crossover game is also Richard’s Pink game of the season, the first time the basketball team will hold one.

Both teams participating wore pink in the form of shoelaces, socks and headbands.
