The Riverview hockey team came back from its long break with a dominating 7-2 win over Gabriel Richard on Jan. 3.

Riverview captain Brian Bachnak led the Bucs to the victory with four goals.

After having such a long break over the holidays, the Bucs started off slowly in the first period, but still managed to take a 1-0 lead when Bachnak scored his first of the night, halfway through the opening period. He was assisted by Timmy Lyons and Gerald Helstowski.

Chris Hass continued his strong season and gave the Bucs a two-goal lead to start the second period. David Laurain and Salton Sutherland assisted on the goal.

Richard came back to bring the game within one goal, but Bachnak and the Bucs had other plans, scoring five more goals to shut the door on the Pioneers.

Bachnak had three more goals, all assisted by Lyons.

Helstowski, the team’s main defenseman, scored his first goal of the year on a slap shot from the point. He also had two more assists, finishing the night with three.

Kyle Agius also finished the night with three assists.

The Bucs started sluggishly, after a practice the day before that did not go well, according to Coach Al Taurence.

“They had the vacation blues,” he said.

The team was also without four players who were out due to injury or illness, forcing Taurence to make some changes.

In the first period, Taurence moved a defenseman to forward and when it didn’t work, he changed things again in the second.

“We switched things around in the second and things all kind of jelled together for us,” Taurence said.

Richard also had players out for this game, but Coach Rick DeSana said it was no excuse.

"We had four players out for the game, which put us shorthanded, but we made too many mistakes and they are a good team that took advantage of them," he said.

This week Riverview has a task ahead of them when they take on Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day and Roosevelt.

Saturday, when the Bucs host the Bears, the senior-heavy team will celebrate Senior Night, honoring their 11 12th-graders.

“Having so many seniors, it’s big,” Taurence said. “We’re senior ridden to we should be prepared.

“We’re really looking forward to it (and) we’ll see where we stand for the second half of the season.”
