There was a lot to celebrate in Gibraltar this holiday season after the Carlson Marauders hosted and won their own holiday tournament last week.
The Marauders dominated Dearborn Heights Annapolis in the tournament finals on Friday 68-48.
Carlson wasted little time building a healthy lead and built a 17-2 lead after one quarter.
The Marauders kept up its defensive pressure in the second quarter and carried a 33-15 lead into the half.
“We came out hot and they didn’t shoot the ball very well,” Carlson Coach Rob Raymond said.
Carlson didn’t allow many open looks for Annapolis with the Cougars only making two field goals in the first half with 11 points coming from the free-throw line.
The Marauders continued to build its lead throughout the second half for the eventual 20-point victory and did a lot of their damage from the charity stripe by going 22-for-24 as a team.
Larnell Tidwell had 22 points and nine rebounds in the victory while Kaylyn Erwin had 17 points and 10 boards and Daton Aaron chipped in with eight points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Aaron was named the tournament’s most valuable player and both Tidwell and Erwin joined him on the all-tournament team.
In Friday’s consolation game, Grosse Ile held off a determined Summit Academy team in a 58-54 Red Devil victory.
“It was a back and forth game,” Summit Coach Don Farago said. “At the end, we just didn’t make the shots that we needed to pull that game out.”
Summit Academy’s Cory Hicks led all scorers with 31 points in the loss while Gregory Glenn added 11.
Grosse Ile’s Danny McCarty led the Red Devils with 21 points.
“They hit a lot of big threes in the second have that really were daggers for us,” Farago said. “We would get within a few points, but then they’d hit a few threes to put it out of reach.”
“It was very competitive for us and we enjoyed being in the tournament.”
On Thursday, Carlson defeated Grosse Ile in the opening round 58-49.
Carlson’s offense was clicking in the first half and the Marauders took a 39-28 lead into the half led by a balanced scoring attack that saw five different players register at least five points. McCarty was solid for Grosse Ile and helped keep the Red Devils close by scoring 15 first-half points.
In the third quarter, Carlson’s offensive momentum came to a screeching halt.
Neither team could get much going early in the second half and the score remained 39-28 more than four minutes into the quarter. The Marauders were held to only four total points as Grosse Ile cut the deficit to four entering the final quarter 43-39. The Red Devils were paced by a pair of Will Sassack three-pointers in the third.
The Red Devils got to within two points early in the fourth, but could not get the game-tying basket as the teams traded scores throughout the quarter before Carlson pulled away late. Aaron and Jared Henson set up their Carlson teammates well down the stretch and assisted on a number of Marauder scoring plays late.
McCarty had a stellar final quarter for the Red Devils, scoring seven of the team’s 10 points.
Evan Wallace led the Marauders with 14 points to go with five rebounds. Aaron had 10 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals, Tidwell had 10 points and six boards and Henson added 10 points and five assists.
